Is there any major difference between x79 and z79 chipset ? Im about to build a new gaming pc and i dont know if i should buy x79 2011 socket with the i7 4820k or the z97 1150 socket with i7 4790k. There is not really any big price difference.

Any help/tips appreciated

There isn't such a thing as a "gaming" chipset, it's just both chipsets have a lot better features set than they're budget friendly counterparts.

X79 has quad channel memory support and lga 2011 support, however it is getting old, i'd wait for X99 to come in September.

Z97 is a lot newer and has support for a lot more things, like M.2 SSD, Sata Express, and other features you won't find on X79.

And btw, don't get a quad core for lga 2011, only get lga 2011 for hexa core cpus, since any of the haswell i7s will beat ivy bridge e quad cores.

It would depend on what you are doing, if you are only going to be gaming, then Z97 all the way. But, if you are going to be rendering and video editing and you need the 6 cores, go with X79. A good CPU for Z97 is the 4690K and for the X79, the 4930K.
