Hello Tom's Hardware members,

I am currently gaming on an Asus NVidia 660 Ti and have been loving it for games like League of legends but it sits fine at 60 fps. Can this be improved with the Sapphire Radeon R9 290? I found a wild deal on one for $175 near me!

Here is my hardware list:
AMD FX-8350 (8 core wonder with a jet engine of a stock cooler) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
ASRock extreme 4 Motherboard
8 GB Crucial memory (4x2)
128gb SSD
500gb Hard Drive storage
600 Watt Power Supply
Aftermarket coolermaster 212 cpu fan
Box with 4 stock fans built in.

Any advice if this is worth the upgrade for the price?

it's at 60fps because you have a 60hz monitor and vsync turned on.

improving the gpu won't improve that number, now getting a better monitor... (a 120-144hz one for example) understand the max framerates your monitor can display is the refresh rate or "hz" of the monitor. vsync is a switch that caps your gpu's fps at the hz of the monitor, to prevent screen tearing or other graphic distortions that can occur when your system is trying to push out 100fps and your monitor can only display 60 of them.

I also have an 8 core AMD, a slightly better gpu r9-280x, and a 60hz monitor... my framerates are locked at 60fps in everything i play because frankly... my hardware (like yours) is probably too strong for my monitor size/resolution/refresh rate.

I appreciate the well typed out post and that this thread should end here :) .

I will look into options of a new monitor, but honestly dont have a lick of a clue on what to buy (120hz I guess?). Any recommendations? 120hz or 144 hz then :) ?

it might be cheaper to just get a 2nd monitor and play across both of them... typically 120hz - 144hz 1080p monitors cost in the $250 range... I would rather buy 2 more 1080p monitors and go triple screen for $250 then spend that much on one monitor at the same resolution i have now.
