I've replaced plenty of different internal parts on systems in the past, but this is my first attempt at doing a complete system build. I used PCPartPicker to make sure the parts were compatible, and it looks good there. The only issue I am running into, is figuring out exactly what combination of custom sleeved cables I need. I am planning on using BitFenix Alchemy custom cables in orange (to go with the orange/black color theme throughout the rest of the build). Here's what I have as far as cables chosen so far:

  • 3 x 30cm SATA 3.0
    1 x 45cm 8-Pin EPS extension
    1 x 30cm 24-Pin ATX extension
    2 x 30cm internal USB extension
    1 x 45cm audio extension
    2 x 30cm I/O extension
    1 x 45cm 8-Pin PCI-E
    1 x 45cm 6-Pin PCI-E
    6 x 90cm 3-Pin fan extension
3 x 45cm Molex to SATA power adapter
    1 x 45cm 4-Pin Molex extension
    1 x 60cm 4-Pin Molex to triple 4-Pin adapter
Here's the complete part list too:

Any assistance in figuring out my cabling dilemma, and any suggestions about changes to the build would be greatly appreciated!

well some games simply won't work with xfire/sli... but atleast AMD fixed xfire enough on the r9-290/r9-290x that it's about as reliable as SLi is now... (for those cards atleast). i figured if you're gonna build a gaming monster on 3 monitors, make it so it can max ANYTHING on 3 monitors... the fact those r9's are cheap enough and strong enough (about the strength of the origional titan) as well as ORANGE it seemed a nice fit.

but again. i wouldn't stress out too much on the cabling. black cabling will work with your build too, and you don't need to special order that.
the only issue i see with your build is you're basically overspending in some areas and won't see any performance gains because of your single 1080p 60hz monitor.

Let me walk you through this. A slow 5 year old core2quad and a modern gpu, or some low end amd quad core like an athlon II x4 750k can hit 60fps in most titles at 1080p resolution with a gtx 780ti gpu. you've got a top of the line cpu, and a top of the line gpu, and you're bottlenecking them both with a weak monitor. Add 2 MORE identical monitors to that setup and go with 3 1080p screens... or go bigger with one 1440p screen... but don't do yourself the disservice of building a kickass gaming system and then bottleneck the output like that.

as for the sleaving... remember you only need to sleave the visible parts. most of your cables should be behind the motherboard tray... so if you underorder what you need, cut them in half, then in half again... you'll have enough sleaving for the visible cables atleast.

I completely see your point with the CPU/GPU and monitor combo. My initial thought was just to get the single monitor and then add on over time. I'd like to keep it under $3K with the possibility to add additional monitors (I would like to have 3 eventually), which is kind of why I went this direction. But I hadn't thought about using a wider monitor...might be something to look into!

Oh, and I'm not looking to sleeve my own cables...not sure I have the experience for that, which is why I was planning on going with pre-sleeved replacement cables I could just replace the provided cables with!

ok.. you're all orange and black theme got me thinking, and it occured to me the biggest hole in the theme is that gpu. so here is an alternative build with a pair of gpus and a couple more monitors... and a better (cheaper) power supply to round it out. YMMV, but i figured you wouldn't mind an alternative to at least look at.

As for orange cabling... probably not necessary unless you want to really hit the orange theme hard. black will work too with your setup, so you don't need ALL of the cabling sleaved. just make sure you have enough black or orange SATA cables for the build.

Thanks for the alt build idea! I've been wondering about running a couple of cards instead of just the single GPU, but wasn't sure if I would run into issues with games being optimized for dual cards. Certainly something to think about though, and I've really been trying to weigh the cost/benefit to going with an i5 instead of the i7, but I might use the extra power in my MS program (working in programming languages). I also considered the Sapphire cards, since they have that "orange" tint on them too!
