Trying to do this in Windows 8.1 but having no luck.

I ran disk management as admin and my drive showed up. I can't recall exactly how I did it but I set it up as GPT, and the whole disk is showing up. However when I right-click on it and select quick format (I went with the default setting of UDF 2.01, not sure if thats right), I'm told it is not possible. Then when I deselect quick format, I'm told the media is write-protected. I googled that and found this:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/245174/restore_access_to_a_write_protected_hard_drive.html

Which basically says use diskpart. But when I type 'list volume' the drive does not show up. What can I do?

Update - used Ubuntu Live CD and gparted to format the drive, then I was able to play around with it in windows disk management. Problem solved
