Netgear repeatedly disconnecting

Hello. This is my first time posting here. Usually I'm able to fix problems with my computer without help but this one has me stumped. I hope someone can help me.

Okay, I'm using a Netgear WNA3100 Wireless USB adapter on Windows XP and whenever I connect to the router I get disconnected within about 2-3 minutes on average. Every once in a while it will last up to 15-20 minutes. I've unchecked the option to 'disable the device to save power'. I've uninstalled the genie program that comes with it and just used the standalone driver for slightly better results. The weird thing is, sometimes when I lose the connection it will completely disable the device and I'll have to reset the computer.

The one and only time it will stay connected for long periods is if I play an online game like Counter-Strike or Day of Defeat (only games I can play on this old computer). It will stay connected for as long as I'm connected to a server. As soon as I quit the game it goes back to disconnecting at regular intervals. This makes me think it has something to do with the connection incorrectly timing out or something, though this doesn't explain why the device completely disables itself occasionally. Networking isn't really my area of expertise so any suggestions as to how I can fix this would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, It's already been suggested to me that I disable Wireless Zero Configuration and this doesn't work. Not only does it not work but it breaks my ability to connect at all.

You may have a bad usb adapter or an issue with XP. Not sure if that device even supports XP. NETGEAR support may be able to answer that. It would be worth a call because if you have a bad adapter they will need to issue rma to get it replaced.

Since it works and then disconnects from the computer it is adapter issue. You can try uninstalling it and re installing the driver. Also check NETGEAR web site to see if you have the latest and correct drivers.

Thanks for the response Bob. I have installed the newest drivers and even went so far as to completely re-install windows. The reason I think it's a windows issue and not an adapter issue is the point I mentioned about it staying connected fine when connected to a gaming server. I'll call Netgear anyway and see what they have to say about it. Thanks.

Given your ability to stay up with the gaming server maybe the issue is that windows is putting the adapter to sleep when not connected to a server that is constantly utilizing the adapter. Just a guess here.

Another option would be to use a wireless bridge in place of the adapter. That's a device like NETGEAR WNCE2001 as an example. It basically connects to the wireless network and outputs through an Ethernet port.

I personally was never a big fan of XP and live on Win7 which I love. Have you considered upgrading the OS? That as you say may be the issue.

In any case issues like these are tough to sort out.

This is a rather old computer. 2 GHz CPU and only 768 MB RAM. I'm pretty sure Windows 7 would not run on it. What about Vista? Do you think it would run okay with so little RAM?
