Computer Freezing During Windows 8.1 Install

I have had difficulty updating my Windows 8 system to Windows 8.1.

Going into the Windows Store, clicking Update to Windows 8.1, the downloader/installer starts up and begins preparing the system for the installation. The task gets as far as "Preparing to Restart," then stops, with no progress being made in hours and the computer failing to restart and finish the installation. Any attempt to utilize the corners (to bring up the charms bar or start page) results in freezing, with mouse mobility still active but no interaction with the OS itself possible (can't get to start page, can't open charms bar, etc.)

I have tried disconnecting all inputs (including mouse and keyboard) to allow the system to install in peace (although it says you can continue using it during the install), and have found that after 3+ hours, the computer just freezes up, and I have to do a hard shut down (hold power button).

Is there any way to ensure a successful install of Windows 8.1 as an update from Windows 8?

Solution
The most recommended method is to back up all your files including documents, pictures, music, windows and application settings and do a clean install of windows 8 followed immediately by updating to 8.1. After that do all your windows updates, then update any necessary or desired drivers and finally reinstall your applications. Upgrading to 8.1 on an established system is a crapshoot at best. Some folks have no issues, I haven't had a problem on any of my four systems. Others have nothing but problems, most of them unresolvable. Good luck.
