Graphics card upgrade help?

Hello, I know this is a common question but after looking over threads and a little research I figured it might be a little easier to just ask. My dual At I Radon HD 4850 cards are in need of a replacement/upgrade and I was hoping on some input on a bit more power vs cost. I'm not a "Hardcore" gamer I guess but I play several mom's and like to crank up the settings and my cards are to the point where they overheat and shutdown even after cleaning. Considered just replacing with the same but thought why not up the powder some if I could.

There is plenty of room in the case, its a rather large Alien ware. 750w PSU. Would appreciate any good suggestions of upgrade without "breaking the bank" and maybe opinions on going with another dual set vs. A single card.

Thanks!

Is there any thing I should look for as far as bottlenecking, I think the 750 psu is power full enough for what I would need but would my board being a few years old would this card lose anything on it? I guess would this card be more than what my motherboard would allow?

Thanks for the response! Not sure what caps a cards performance as far as mb's go.

What CPU? Also a GPU should run fine on anything PCIE 2.0 @ 4x or higher (Would help to name the MB). I'm running crossfire HD 7950s (R9 280 is the same card, just newer) overclocked on a MB with PCIE 3.0 16x @ 16x and PCIE 2.0 16x @ 4x with no bottlenecks. Also you could run two R9 280s on a 750w PSU, because thats basically what I'm doing, unless you have a extremely power hungry CPU.

Go with the r9 280, as others have said. It will run all, if not most, games on max settings. Newegg selling one for 169$ right now too

Can you link the $170 one?

The processor is an Intel CORE 2 Quad Q9400 2.66ghz. The motherboard is a Asus P5N-D. I've not really had any troubles playing my games with those cards but figured if I have to replace might not hurt to get something a little newer. :)

Wow thats a colorful MB, anyways the MB will work (Even for CFX) but your CPU may bottleneck a bit. So that may be something to upgrade in a while if it ends up bottlenecking.

Yeah. Depending on what you get your CPU might bottleneck

Actually if you get the r9 270x it will be bottle necked. Not enough to affect it in a huge way though. You may want to upgrade your CPU later.

May end up going with that then. Was just trying to get one that wouldn't be overly deminished by my current setup rather than having to upgrade, as I said my games haven't really run in to any problems. If anyone else has any suggestions keep them coming but looks like most are of like mind so far!

The 270 will as well? Hmm, anything that's an upgrade that won't be limited?

I read that Crossfire HD 4850s compare to a HD 6850, so a R7 265 should be an upgrade, and be very cheap while it shouldn't get bottlenecked. So I would recommend that unless anyone wants to correct me on any info I listed above if it is wrong.

Sorry don't know how to edit on my phone but you'll be fine with getting an r9 270 (non x) it will not be bottleneck by your cpu. The r7 265 posted by steel will not be bottlenecked as well however the r9 270 is superior to it. IMO get the r9 270 over the 265 as you can get a 270 for the same/cheaper price right now

Awesome! Thank you, and thank you all especially for the quick and informed responses! I had been away from my games for a bit and of course when I want to get back into them is when these issues come up...dont like having to wait lol. Will try and get one ordered! :)

Let me ask one last question if I could. Going with the R9 270, is there any signifigant difference between the one linked before and this version at Walmart that has the dual fans?

http://www.walmart.com/ip/XFX-Radeon-R9-270-Double-D-R9...

Didn't know if there was anything more and whether there would be a signiigant difference to the temp. Sin I get a discount the price would balance out a little, just curious. Thanks again!

The walmart one actually looks like it would run cooler with two fans.

Yeah the walmart one will run cooler. The one I linked you will still do fine however, and its cheaper, but yeah the walmart one will run cooler.

Awesome, 270 ordered! Thanks again all! Though I lied...if I could ask one more question, really more of a down the road one but since I started the thread already....

If at some point I wanted to get another and crossfire them would I get more out of them? Obviously there would be two but I wasn't sure how these worked as far as being limited by the mob. If one is near bottlenecking will a second one benefit being on its own second slot or would they be limited together?

Not sure if I asked that clearly but hopefully you get what I'm asking lol. Thanks!

I would get a better CPU. I'm not a SLI/XF expert though. Would not recommend XFing unless its 280 or above and only reason you'd crossfire is to play on across multiple monitors or if you're playing 4k. But yeah if you're thinking of spending anymore money on a GPU, would recommend to buy a new CPU instead.

If at some point I did upgrade the CPU I suppose I would have to do the mob too? Or would it support just upgrading the CPU? This is only theoretical atm anyway sine so far I've not really run into any issues but would be nice to know.

I'd assume you'd want to get a new LGA 1150 mobo so you can get a 4690k. Bout to eat will be back later

Hmm, OK. Well maybe at some point I'll upgrade. Not really the time to spend a lot on it but I need video lol. Thanks for all the info! I get looking at these things but there are just too many choices!

If you do get another MB and CPU, Haswell Refresh (The I5 4690 is Refresh, I5 4670 is older) is on the new Z97 MBs so you will be able to upgrade one more generation since Broadwell will also use Z97.

Well though I did want a reason to upgrade at some point it looks like the gfx card may not have been or not have been the full issue... I don't know what's wrong. When I turn it on it powers but doesn't always boot other than a black screen, if I urn it off and on again I can once I acknowledge the boot failure load into windows and other times it shuts down on its own...

I know this isn't the forum just not sure what the issue is. I unplugged and replugged all the cables in case something was loose and tried prior to the graphics card another psu... It doesnt even always go off but goes black. don't know. :(
