Hi Everyone-

I would appreciate your help with something. I have a hard disk that has been malfunctioning. I have recovered almost all of the data. At this point, I just want to figure out which portion of my recovered data is corrupted.

How can I figure out which sectors are bad? How can I figure out which files are associated with those bad sectors? I appreciate your help!

Solution
HDTune which you can download for free can do a sector by sector scan of the hard drive and will show you where the bad sectors are.

It can also show you how many bad sectors are in there as well. If its a USB drive though HDTune wont help you. Have yo use Crystal Disk info which can read the SMART data of a USB Drive.

Hi drtweak-

Thanks so much for your recommendation. I have a couple of additional questions:

1. Will HDTune mark the bad sectors as bad in the file system or just identify the bad sectors without making any changes to the file system? I don't want it to mark the bad sectors as bad in the file system. I have already put the drive in read-only mode so hopefully no changes to the file system are possible.

2. Can HD Tune tell me which files are located on those bad sectors? This is what I want to do: figure out which specific sectors are bad and which specific files are located on those sectors.

Thanks again!
