1866 Mhz in BIOS showing up as 1333 Mhz in task manager.

My current build:

  • Intel i5 4670k
    HyperX Fury (2x4gb) @ 1866 Mhz
Nvidia Geforce GTX 770 (4gb of vram)
    Intel z97 mobo
Earlier tonight I noticed in the task manager (windows 8.1) that my ram, which should be 1866 Mhz, is currently running at 1333 Mhz. A quick google search indicated that i need to change the speed in the BIOS, so I booted into the BIOS. In the BIOS, it displayed my ram as running at 1866. I need clarification as to whether my ram is actually running at 1866 Mhz, or if I'm misreading something in the BIOS. Any help is appreciated, thanks!!

Yep, want to enable XMP and select the profile 1 or proper freq...there aren't any mobos, that simply automatically set your DRAM up to 1866 or above, in fact very few that even will default to 1600.....sounds like the Kingston guy needs to find out what he's talking about...When first installed all DRAM goes to the mobos default, which generally today is 1333 for Intel and 1066 or 1333 for AMD ;)

apparently my 2 sticks of ram are supposed to automatically overclock themselves to whatever speed I had purchased, according to Kingston (the manufacturer). It looks like it is running at 1866 in my BIOS, but is not in Task manager. There is also no "enable" option for XMP because of this feature.

I can't actually select an xmp
Profile, as there is no option to in the BIOS. How would I go about manually overclocking?

I have an asus z97-a, and in the "ez tuning" section of the bios, the xmp drop down menu only presents me with a "disabled" option

Ok, That board has EZ XMP which is not easy at all. On your motherboard, top right corner, under the MemOK button there is an EZ_XMP switch. Flick this to on and you should have access to XMP and overclocking.

thank you! I emailed kingston about this issue and they have yet to respond to me. I cant believe I reinstalled my RAM like 5 times thinking that it was a mobo issue.

Where exactly can I find that information? In my BIOS or task manager?

It does say 933 in Cpu-z. Being that this is my first build and im still relatively new to hardware, can you explain why Cpu-z is able to validate that my ram is running at 1866 Mhz (even though it displays 933), and why task manager fails to show an accurate speed?

As mentioned Task Manager looks to the SPD of the sticks at the default boot speed of 1333, the 933 is the true freq of the DRAM, since this is DDR DOUBLE data Rate, then you take true freq (933) x 2 = 1866 effective - so it appears you did get XMP enabled and yes it's running at 1866 ;)

Kingston Fury ram does not have an xmp profile as mentioned in many reviews of the ram online and I also know from experience as a I have the ram installed in my system.
It does however defualt to 1866 mhz when installed in the system because of the way it is programed. As confirmed in the bios and CPU-Z.

I have the same issue but I don't have an option to enable XMP and have to manually set the DRAM frequency which i have done, but when I take a look in task manage I'm still at 1333Mhz... What do I do in this situation?
