General Info -

I don't remember how long I have had this issue for, I want to say ending of may or mid june. (Was so stressed about recovering files off of a dying HDD that I don't remember anything outside of my trying to save those files and work.) Now that my files are safe, it is time for me to figure out what is going on with the GPU.

I've had the computer for about 1 year and 4 months give or take. Never had any issues playing games and never had any noticeable lag. I started seeing lag after a DDOS attack on one of the MMO's I was playing. From what I do know about DDOS attacks, it should have nothing to do with my computer and 9 out of 10 my lag issue was just coincidental.

Despite the mild lag my games still ran relatively fine on full screen. For awhile I thought it was just the game due to the DDOS attack. Even when the attack was over I told my guild mates that the game had not been running lag free since. Now I'm wondering if that might have been signs from my GP that there were issues. This was all back in february - march but the crashes started started may - mid june so I don't know.

Straight to the point -

Before the crashes started I was able to play both Aion and Archeage. I was able to have both open at the same time on high graphics with no issues. Two things I recall happening before the crashing started.

But I don't remember what happened first.

1) AI Suite II popped up for some random update and I accidentally hit auto-tuning
2) Nvidia had a update as well and I updated the card.

After that the game will start and play flawlessly for about 5 minutes max before the game and my entire computer starts to lag in stutter sort of way. Either I have to close the game myself to get everything to go back to normal, or even after closing the game the lag stays until I restart my computer, or the game will crash, my screen will black out and return telling me this:

Afterwards everything is back to normal, no issues anywhere.

Computer information -

OS: Win 7 (64 bit)
MB: ASUS P8Z77-V PRO Z77
CPU: i7-3770
PS: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX V2
Ram: 16GB
GPU: GTX 670 2GB - this came superclocked (so says my receipt)

When does this happen -

I can watch movies just fine. It seems to only happen when I am playing Archeage and sometimes while playing Aion. (have not really played it since then, only opened it to see if the GPU would crash too, it did not crash, but it did lag like in Archeage)

What have I tried -

I have tried undoing what the auto - tuning did (it didn't really make any changes that I noticed so I left it alone)
I removed Nvidia completely and reinstalled 337.88 - Did not help
I removed Nvidia completely and installed 301.42 & then upgraded 1 by 1 all the way back to 337.88 - did not work
I removed Nvidia completely 1 by 1 and tested the game - It was either 331.82 or 332.21 that the game worked with for about a week or 2 it lasted I think.
I then removed Nvidia completely and reinstalled 331.82 or 332.21 and for a little bit it worked but then stopped and somehow I have 337.88 again and I don't remember why I downloaded it AGAIN. (Maybe I was like since the other one doesn't work I may as well have this one since none of them work!)

I read so many threads. Some said its the voltage, an overclocking issue, the computers temperature, the graphics card is shot or loose, its the CPU, and dust is the issue (to name a few solutions I found on other threads). I was told to use CPU-Z, HWmonitor, and Unigine Heaven (there were other programs but I only used these three):

CPU-Z -

This is how everything looked while playing Archeage:

This is how it looked while running Unigine Heaven on High graphics:

And Unigine Heaven on Ultra graphics (I got a warning about something reaching 1.2 volt, it faded away before I finished reading it though):

The test and game would only play for about 5-10 min before crashing the program.

Final thoughts -

Dust aside, I don't think anything is over heating, nor do I think the PSU is not working right, like some suggested in other threads. I personally think it has to do with the Nvidia installation not installing right. But I am still new to all this, so I'm not really sure.

Does anyone know what I should do or try? Or at least does anyone know how I can make sure Nvidia installs right?

Solution
It's hard to help you remotely with this as it may just be a software glitch. Since Memtest passes and there's no obvious hardware problem I can see.

Perhaps it's time to consider reinstalling Windows.

When you have a stable system I suggest creating a backup with Acronis True Image. The 2014 full version is on sale right now; I think it's $35 but it's well worth the money as you can create automate backups then RESTORE whichever one you choose.

I make WEEKLY, automated backups of my SSD to a hard drive (full, then five incremental). When I finish the 2nd chain it deletes my old chain. If you get a major virus you can't fix or your Windows drive dies you can restore in minutes.

For heat problems 80 degrees does seem kind of high for a CPU (As shown in one of the pictures), but shouldn't hurt unless at that temp for a long time. So heat is probably not the problem. What I would recommend trying is to get another GPU from a friend and see if the problem occurs. If it does then the GPU isn't the problem, and the problem is the driver or some other component. If it fixes the problem, you can get a new GPU since it should still be under warranty.

Hey,
1) run MEMTEST first to see if your DDR3 system memory is working properly. You can get lots of issues if not:
www.memtest.org

Do a full pass. You may need to change the boot order so the DVD drive is first (in the BIOS). Or USB if you use a USB thumb drive.

*If Memtest fails it may be bad memory or a bad setting. Read your motherboard manual for which slot to use for a single stick only then test each stick separately. If one fails, but one passes you've found your problem and need to RMA your memory.

2) Other:
May be a software issue though if different games are crashing I can't think of a good reason. You could try using System Restore:
a) Set a RESTORE POINT now, then
b) RESTORE to a point prior to the problem happening.

3) Other hardware?
If your hard drive issue and crashing start about the same time and it's the WINDOWS drive that was affected perhaps you have corrupted files.

Was it the Windows drive? If so, did you just CLONE to a new drive or did you reinstall Windows completely?

I don't have anyone I can borrow a GPU from. Pretty much all my friends within a decent living distance are computer illiterate. They either don't have a computer or own old ones. I was trying to play a lower graphic MMO on one of their computers, with everything set to lowest graphics and their computer still died.

Also trying to explain what a GPU is to them and explain why I need to borrow it, is like trying to explain what color looks to a person who was born color blind. It will be extremely hard, and perhaps impossible for me to do. This makes borrowing from someone is out of the question.

1) I used the Memtest, but nothing seemed to fail, I am going to go read over the guide to be sure. It seemed to stay on test #7 and I couldn't leave unless I restarted. But like I said, I'm reading over the guide again to make sure.

2) I have done a system restore already. Since my external HDD is having issues, I can't do another system restore at the moment. I back up all my stuff on that in case something goes wrong. I can reboot when I get another.

3) When I ran the Heaven test (it only test the GPU), the issues started, so I am sure that it is the GPU. I rebooted using the CD. But I can try to remove the 337.88, then repair windows with the CD and then install again.

I don't have a Trojan or virus. When I noticed my computer acting different I thought it could have been that too. I used Malwarebytes, spy-bot search and destroy, as well as my current virus protector. I also used a few other programs to scan the registry (not registry cleaners) and check roots for any suspicious activity.

Sorry for my absence, there was a family emergency and I had to up and leave home.

This thread is old but I wanted to post the solution to my problem at least.

The issue was with the new update release from nvidia. I had to uninstall the nvidia updates until I finally reached one that no longer had issues. Once I did that, everything was fine.

Thank you everyone for your help.
