I have an MSI B85 G41 Mobo and a 4960 processor which is devils canyon and apparantly would need an update before it could work. Problem is the PC wont boot up without this update.

Is there anything I can do short of getting a new mobo?

Solution
If you had access to a previously compatible CPU, then you could perform the upgrade and then install the new CPU. Otherwise, you need MSI to flash the BIOS (assuming the mobo doesn't have a compatible BIOS now) or exchange the mobo for one already compatible.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. In the process of getting a refund now and picking a new 97 motherboard. Which would you recommend out of these two?

MSI H97 GUARD-PRO

MSI H97 Gaming 3

I have no idea as to the differences between them except one is £10 more expensive. And price is a concern for me.

Thanks for any replies!

EDIT: Saw the difference, HDMI in the gaming3 one. Guess I'm going with that one

That was the original pic I was so excited about before the incompatibility :(

I will try and remember this thread and on monday when all is said and built and I have my monitor and new mobo I will link sexy pics! First build so it might be late in the day haha.

I will keep this thread open.

This is all I could find about the MoBo's BIOS. This is my first build and I know nothing about computers so I don't know if you know what this means?

i5 4690, no k. It does say something at the bottom of that page about being able to boot the BIOS from USB or something? Maybe I can do that if it doesn't work

don't know most time it will state what bios supports the chips like a 4670 is supported under bios starting with bios 1 and say a newer chip like yours may be supported with bios 3 or newer so if the board comes with bios 1 or 2 the newer chip may not post as you found out above

If you ever want to get a K CPU, get a Z97 motherboard. It'll make your life easier when you OC.
