Where to set a motherboard when adding the components?

Where can a motherboard be placed when adding the components? For example, is a wooden table a bad place? What about a large plastic pad I have on my wooden table? Is an anti-static may necessary if I have a plastic table pad?

I, personally use the same box the motherboard comes in or after I have it attached inside the case. If the motherboard came inside a bag, that bag is anti-static and you can use it as base too.
