Case/PSU Suggestions Wanted

Okay, my main question is about a PSU. Is there any reason to avoid buying a PSU that is overpowered? What I mean is, I have a GTX 780Ti and an i7 2600, and I'm thinking about buying a 1000W PSU.

I know I don't need anywhere near that for a single GTX 780Ti, but there's a good chance I'll buy a second 780Ti or maybe a pair of 880Ti (or whatever comes along) if they seem to be a decent upgrade around the beginning of 2015.

You're probably thinking I should just wait until I buy a new card(s) before I decide on a PSU.. Here's the problem. My current Thermaltake Smart Series 850W PSU has a very annoying coil whine. Because of the orientation of my case (Raven RV03) the PSU is right next to my right ear and is very annoying. Thermaltake won't RMA even though I have a 5 year warranty because I do not have my receipt. I thought I might as well just buy a new PSU and prepare for future upgrading by getting a 1000W.

My other option is to buy a more traditional case where the PSU is in the back. I think that would make the noise a lot more tolerable. It's not loud, but a buzzing right beside your head gets annoying.

So, a PSU won't use any more power than it needs to, right? I'd be fine with 1000W even though that's more than I need? By the way, I know how to pick a good PSU and I won't be buying junk. I realize I will be spending $200-$250 which is more than a case would cost me so I do not need recommendations on which PSU to buy.

I know this decision is up to me, I guess I'm just wanting some opinions. What would you do?

Thanks!

Ok? Thanks, kind of... I specifically mentioned that I don't need suggestions picking out a specific PSU. I'm not an idiot and I know which PSUs are good. I guess you didn't read that far down?

I realize that, but the Thermaltake PSU I have is not junk. Aside from coil whine (which can affect any PSU brand), it's a great PSU. But this is all irrelevant. I told you I know which PSUs are good. I'm not here asking for PSU suggestions.

Thanks,

I put all of that information in the original post. It's a Thermaltake Smart Series 850W Modular 80+ power supply. I contacted Thermaltake about an RMA but they will not honor the warranty without the original receipt - which I no longer have (I also mentioned this in my original post... None of this has anything to do with my discussion.)

Brick and Mortar, unfortunately. I emailed them and they told me the exact same thing. If I had gotten off of Newegg I would be fine. :(

You think 850W is okay even for 780Ti SLI? I mean, I know it's "technically" enough, but I thought a little extra cushion was best?

Yes, 850 will be perfectly fine. Gaming load 2x 780ti in SLI will pull 550w. The rest of your system will use less than 300w.

Plus an Antec, Seasonic, XFX 850w PSU is really a 900-1000w unit re-labeled. All the top-tier companies do this.

If you really want the Antec HCG-900 is a VERY good pick and will be perfect for your needs. 900w is plenty. 50w more than 850, but not quite 1000w.

Also, if I may ask, what scree(s) arrangement do you game on as even a single 780ti is overkill for a single 1080p monitor.

I own both a 120hz 1920x1080 monitor as well as a 2560x1440 (60hz) monitor. I mainly use the 2560x1440 and while most games run well, coming from my 120hz monitor fps dipping below 60 really annoys me. I imagine by next year I'll need a second 780Ti in order to keep going strong at 2560x1440.
