Hey,
This is the first time I'm building my own pc and I ended up buying the 1tb Wd green because I was tight on my budget.
Anyway, I came across two major issue about the hdd.

1. The advanced format - it's is said that these drives are advanced format drives, needing to aligned using their software (incase you plan to install xp). I have windows 8.1 so I don't think it should matter much, but should I go ahead with the alignment process anyway. Besides I'll be using this drive as my primary drive and intend to transfer data from my old drive onto this one, so should I need to advance format the drive for the same.

2. The second issue is the parking head issue which I came across. As far as my knowledge goes, the parking head rests every 8 seconds by default which leads to a large number of llc compared to the hours of usage which results in the hard disk dieing. I have come across few places where it is said that the newer version like the one I have are better than the older versions, but I'm not very convinced.
Anyway it is said that by increasing the parking head idle time I can better the longetivity of the hdd ( using widdle3.exe). I have no idea how to use it but I think I can do it by googling it.
So my question is should I run the widdle3 application or if it is even compatible with my version of the hard disk, since nothing is given on the official website.

I know it is a bit long but in gist,
1. Should I advance format my drive
2. Should I reduce the idle time for parking head.

Thanks in advance.

P.s - please be elaborate if you can. :D

Hi

Advanced format 4k sectors appeared about the same time as 1TB hard drives and now applies to most new hard drives and SSD's . It is not something you do when formatting the drive . It. Requires the partition program is aware the drive has 4k sectors and ensures the partitions start and end on 4 k boundaries
Most of these drives can emulate 512byte sectors but are slowed down when doing the translation

If you partition the drive using vista or latter you do not need to do anything to align the partitions with the 4 k sectors

As the info says this problem only applies to XP and earlier windows

Look at advice on WD website and use their utilities for changing head parking times

Parking hard drive heads regularly is useful or important on laptops (2.5") less so on desktops (3.5")
