How much better is the 212 EVO compared to the stock intel cooler, how much lower are the temps under idle and load, and how far can I overclock my cpu with stable temps with the 212 EVO?
Also, does the intel cooler allow for ANY overclocking or is it really that crap?
which thermal paste should I use with my 212 EVO to get the lowest temps?. Amazon and eBay links only please (UK sites)

Thanks for the help and insight into this issue.
All responses appreciated.

Intel stock cooler is really CRAP. You can't do any overclocking on it.

The hyper 212 EVO you should be able to get at least 4.6Ghz to 4.8Ghz on a good chip.

As for thermal paste, I don't know of any good ones, I suggest you look at toms review on thermal paste.

Your temperatures are dependent on environmental factors, such as your case and airflow and ambient temperatures so we really can't guess how much of a difference the 212 EVO would be. But its only $30 or so, and I think its safe to say you'd get at least that much value out of it.

As for overclocking with the stock cooler, of course you can, but temperatures will increase very rapidly. You may get a few hundred MHz out of it, but forget about voltage increases. I'd say you don't want to go over 70*C or so under load for settings you intend to actually use.

The 4790K will run at stock turbo 4.4 all day long.
How much more do you really need?
You could do it probably with the stock cooler. But, under load, the stock small fan spins up and gets noisy.
For the noise reason alone, spending $30 on a tower cooler and a slow turning 120mm fan seems like a good idea to me.
