HELP: is my CPU mounting backplate defective?

I've been using AMD and so am new to Intel. I bought a Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H and right away was met with a ton of installation woes...first, I had to apply a lot more force than I thought would be necessary to lock the mounting lever into place. I checked over and over again that my chip was oriented correctly (it was. fit into place, triangle corners aligned) but the black plastic cover wouldn't come off even though I was pushing very hard, and it started to make a squeaking noise. In the end I just popped it off myself. With the lever locked into place, the backplate behind the motherboard flexes visibly and I could even see the board itself flexing as I bent the arm down into place.

When I released it again, I saw that the load plate had left marks in the sides of my CPU, it was pushing down so hard:

is this normal?

Also, I am unable to mount my cooler (CRYORIG R1 Ultimate) because I can't get its backplate to sit flush against the back of the board. It's a little hard to see, but if you look back at the first picture, the screw on the bottom protrudes outward more than the top two, preventing the cooler backplate from seating correctly.

I tried using the stock cooler too, but could not get the mounting pins in their proper positions for the life of me. The bottom two seemed snug, but the top two just wouldn't lock into place. When I managed to remove it, I saw that it hadn't even made contact with the CPU (the preapplied paste hadn't touched the surface of the chip).

Lastly I don't know if I'm going crazy but the chip seems ever so slightly crooked sitting in the socket:

And I doing something wrong here?

edit: none of the photos show up so I linked to them instead.

I may as well.

BTW if you aren't doing anything CPU intensive I'd recommend the Pentium G3258. It has an unlocked multiplier and it's only 75$ at Newegg. Saves you some $$$. You can upgrade to the i5-4690K later. When you receive your new motherboard and/or CPU, let me know if it works or not.
