Thermal Paste Problem

Hello I was wondering if any problem would arise because I had to take the cpu cooler off, when the thermal paste was already on it, and put it back on. I had do this because the stupid aftermarket cooler was being a pain to put on. Also I noticed a little thermal paste around the sides of the claps, so i just cleaned it off (not sure if i got it all off but only remaining would be residue). Would any residue left cause any problems.

Solution
As stated, if you remove and put back the cooler without replacing the thermal paste, it should work, but you might get a bit higher temperatures. Be sure to monitor your CPU temperature if you decide to go that way.

I would recommend that you replace the thermal paste if you have some on hand. If it is not the case, you'll probably be fine reusing the old one, but I would consider this a temporary solution.

Most thermal pastes are non-conductive, so it generally isn't an issue if you spill some. A residue should definitively not cause any issue. Not sure what you mean by "claps", however.

The temps would get higher you create a whole bunch of air bubbles when you do that it is recommended that you clean off the old stuff and and apply new paste every time the cooler comes off. So if i were you i would put some new paste on there but if your temps are okay then you might be alright.

I assumed he meant the clamps that keep the cpu in place?

If so, same thing happened to me and I cleaned it off but temps are a bit high. I am probably going to clean and reapply thermal and see if it helps with temps.
