Specs:

  • AMD Phenom(tm) 9750 Quad-Core Processor 2.40 GHz
    8GB Ram
    64-bit OS
    VGA -> AMD R7 260x 2gb dual fan (recommended 500W PSU)
    VGA -> AMD 3000 series graphics (don't know how to remove or where it is)
    PSU -> Thermaltake 600W
    Motherboard -> Gateway DX4300
    Windows 7

So the issue I have currently arose when I purchased my R7 260x graphics card. It was the first time I'd ever updated my computer's graphics, and the first time I'd ever touched my computer, but I believe I grounded myself (to avoid frying the motherboard) by touching the nail on a power outlet.

My initial purchase was an R7 260x graphics card along with a 520W PSU to cover for the recommended 500W PSU on the VGA's descriptions. I removed my old VGA, which was AMD 4650 and inserted the R7 260x. I booted up my CPU and was able to play on higher settings after updating my drivers, etc.

However, randomly during gaming my monitor's screen would go black and I wouldn't be able to revive it, yet I would still be able to hear noises such as gunshots, people talking, and my music, and at the same time I wasn't able to get a response out of my computer. It seemed the whole display and response had turned off except for the audio.

I took both the graphics card and PSU back to exchange them; however, when I was there they were selling a Thermaltake 600W and I pricematched it to get it $10 cheaper than the 520W PSU, so I left happy. I got home and installed the graphics card and PSU again and didn't have issues ... until last night.

I turned off my monitor to go downstairs and eat, and when I returned the monitor was not responding. I could still hear my friends talking, but I could get no response out of moving my mouse or keyboard. Moving my mouse down to areas in my computer that I knew for a fact should have been responsive did not instigate any response.

My friends could hear me talking, and I could hear them, but my monitor was blank and I couldn't talk with them.

The only solution to this issue was to force restart the computer by holding down the LED power button.

Any ideas? Is it a motherboard problem?

This happens on my R7 260X card. It is quite peculiar. No driver version to date has fixed this. Until a fix for this is released, I recommend putting your computer to sleep if you're going to be away for a short period of time.

There is nothing that can be done until AMD releases a stable driver.

I have the same exact problem and the same exact GPU. R7 260X. I really wish I could find out why it's happening. I've looked all over, found multiple cases, but no solutions. It baffles me.

after 3 years if youre still having this problem or anyone else, simply replace the thermal paste on your gpu. if you don't know how to do that just look on youtube. fixed mine. also if you have a asus card go into your asus gpu tweak settings and turn off the 0db fan. if thats an option on any gpu tweak app turn that off. it cooled my idle from 50 to 35

That actually didn’t work. I had to just replace my gpu.
