So I want to make my old desktop into a media server so I can have my pictures, files, music etc on one computer and still be able to view them on all computers. How do I do this?

Is that all I have to do?
Yes, Just make sure that the computer becoming a media server has Windows 7 installed and is part of a homegroup. It's quite simple.
If you're still unsure, there is a tutorial about how to set it up here:
You have to map the computer that you want to create the server "As a network drive". In Windows 7, you would go to "My Computer" and then select "Map Network Drive". You then need to type in the IP Address of the computer on your network. This usually starts as 192.168... This will mean that all of your computers connected to the same network will recognize the server.
