Is my Hyper 212 Evo installed right (vertically) and what else do i need for a better airflow?

Hi everyone.

So as explained on the title, i've installed the hyper 212 evo in my pc. My temps are:

35-40c idle (sometimes a bit more)
60-65 when playing a game (not full load) with room temp 25-27c.
I'm afraid i did something wrong there. Also my pc case is extreme hot. So my questions are:

1) Have i installed the evo 212 right? I mean, is the fan and the heatsink in the right position? I've installed it vertically (it blow the air up). I did this because i was afraid that my RAM cards will block the fan. Is this the right way to install it? Is this causing problems? What's the best way to install it?

2) Im giving you a photo of my pc with the airflow i currently have. The blue arrows shows the intake/blow and the red arrows the exhast. I only have 1 fan that blows in and 1 that exhausts.

If someone could give me some advices for a better airflow (extra fans, where to place them etc) i would be grateful :)

Thank you! :)

I have a 212 Evo and a 2700K at 3.9 and at torture test (full load) I get 58C at 26C ambient and 51 at 20C ambient. But I have my 212 installed horizontally - pushing air to the back. You are getting not so optimal results. I have to say I find horizontal placement rather optimal. You can also adjust the fan hight with few cm so it does not hit you RAM modules. Also, what is your case? Do you have case fans? How much thermal paste did you put? When was the last time you changed the thermal paste and/or cleaned the heatsink?

for that cooler with that CPU your temps are normal and they fine you installed it right i have the same cooler with a i7 3770 and i idle around 30C and my load temps are around 70C

but i installed the cooler on a FX 6300 overclock to 4.5 Ghz and i get around 10C idle and 60C full load (i have two fans on it)

I know i have a poor airflow in my pc. Do you think that i have to install some more fans to lower my temps some few degrees? I think i need one fan in the top to exhaust the hot air, i don't know what else i need and where tho...

My case is the Thermaltake Commander Msi. I have only one fan in the back that exhausts the air (the stock one) and one fan in the front that blows air.
This is the photo of my pc with my airflow : http://imgur.com/zBFKnYb
The blue arrows are the intake and the red ones the exhaust,

I putted some small portion in the middle of the cpu (in a size of a rice). I used arctic silver 5. Bought and installed the heatsink about 2 days ago.

that's on the hot side but not outragiously so.

you can always try the evo with the fan pointed backwards... understand... some heatpipe cpu coolers actually have an orientation preference. Not all of them, but some do. I don't think the Evo is one that cares if it's pointed up or back, but remember, with it pointed up, it's sucking hot air off the back of your gpu and blowing it through the heatsink. you'll probably see a 5C drop in temps if you move the gpu to another pci-e port further down on your motherboard, or you turn the cooler to face toward the back of the case.

This is how a thermal paste is properly applied. A know a lot of people are going to shout on the internet, but the "card spread method" is the best one. You use a plastic card (old bank card, driver license (if it is plastic in your country) or anything like this) and spread the paste in a nearly transparent film on the CPU spreader. Then when installing the heatsink - after you put it down - don't lift it again, else you will mix some air in the paste making it an isolator instead of a conductor. I also use the cooler master paste provided with the heatsink. I deem it very good. Not the best - but very good.

Also Artic Silver 5 has a burn down period of 200 hours. Meaning, after the first 200 hours, the past sets in, and temps drop with several degrees.

http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appmeth/int/vl/intel_app_method_vertical_line_v1.1.pdf

This is how Artic Silver is recommended to be applied. I will still use the full spread method though.

the card spread method works on intel cpus better then amd ones. intel cpus have a slightly concave heat-spreader... amd ones are slightly convex. the card method doesn't really work on them... the bead method works on ALL cpus... which is why it's so popular. furthermore the card method when done wrong will leave air bubbles, the bead method will not (as long as you don't rock the cpu cooler, which will leave air bubbles no matter what method you use)

I do agree that the card method is the easiest method to screw up. But if you can do it - it is the best method - regardless of concave or convex surface. There is also the possibility of his video card dumping all the hot air towards the cooler.

Hi again. I have some news! :D
So i changed the position of the evo 212 like you suggested (horizontally, hot air blown away in the back) and i can say, i'm impressed by the result. The temps dropped almost 10c!! It was 65-66 with only one game played and now is 55-56!

I didn't stressed my pc with prime95 or something like that because i don't find it so useful (never going to stress my not oce'd cpu 100% in my everyday use) and so i tested the temps with the load i usually have in my pc, 2 rather demanding games playing at the same time (ultra high graphs both), youtube and facebook on, 2-3 word docs opened, steam and battle-net.

So as i said, my temps are now 55-56 with a good amount of load. I used Arctic Silver 5 and i know that there is a 200hours time to cure and so the temps will drop some few degrees more.

Do you think that my temps will drop more if i put some new fans? I only have the stock exhaust fan in the back from the case.

Good to hear. Case fans don't necessary drop by much, but what they do is cool down the motherboard components and provide enough air so the CPU and GPU coolers can spin slower while providing the same cooling. It depends on your case, so case fans might or might not make a bit difference. Cheers and good luck.
