I have an HP elitebook 8440p. It was recertified when I purchased it a couple of years ago. My battery has been needing replacement for many months but I ran the computer off a/c. A few months ago it started to occasionally shut down...just go black. the only way to get it started was to take out the battery and unplug the a/c when they were replaced the machine would start again with the error code 'Windows was shut down improperly. I always get a message at the beginning of starting up as to which mode I want to boot up "normal, safe, etc". I'd click normal and carry on. There was a definite problem with the a/c connection as it had to be wiggles around to get it charging. Now the computer is completely dead...will not power on at all. I have tried to remove both the battery and the cord and holding the power button for 30 sec but the computer won't power on with battery only , a/c only or both. My question is...can anyone give me any idea how to diagnose which hardware likely failed? I have taken apart the computer. the a/c jack looks fine and isn't loose. what other things could it be and how do I check them.
thanks
it is running windows 7 professional

Solution
You will need to replace that battery part completely. I had this happen to me. Because the battery will not hold a charge at all is the reason. It is quite expensive to replace as well.
