Question about my motherboard and RAM

Hello all, a couple of months ago I wanted to "futureproof" (call it silly or unnecessary if you want) and got 2 Kingston hyperX 8gbs of RAM 16gbs in total. I had 2 g-skill ripjaws 2 x 4gbs which are laying around now. I was thinking since I replaced them and added the new ones in the blue slots, same place where the older ones were. Can I just add the old 2 x 4gbs of RAM on the black slots instead of them just laying around doing nothing or will it be worse or it doesn't work at all? I'm not that tech savvy, I know a few things but unless those other slots were meant for a different type of RAM like DDR2 instead of DDR3? I know I don't need them but since they're just staying there and I don't know anyone who might want to use them. My motherboard is ASUS P8Z77-V if that helps. Thanks in advance.

and have you ever tried to RMA a mobo from them based on the DRAM not working - even though they say that? Then they refer you to their QVL and tell you they only support the DRAM configs as tested. They also do not guarantee that they will work, the explanation there is simply letting people know that the mobo supports 'flex' mode, where you can install sticks of different sizes, and no the CAS doesn't have to be the same - they say it should be - but that's sort of a oxymoron as if you know what your are doing you can mix CAS 7 and 9 reasonably easily (if you know DRAM, sadly there are very few that are comfortable dealing with DRAM base timings, secondary or tertiary timings, let alone MC voltages (and that's true of the 'techs'...

Stick em in and give it a try. Just go into your bios and make sure the frequency, timings, and voltages are the same for both kits and I think it'll work. Though, I'm not sure what you need 24 Gb of RAM for lol.

I don't need 24GB of RAM lol. Honestly it's mostly out of curiosity I will most likely not do anything at all but I was just curious whether it will work or whether those 2 other slots were meant for different types of sticks or something. 16GB is already more than enough I don't think I'll change anything but I want to know if it's possible.

Like oskerw says the cas latency has to be the same for any dimm you install. With the 8gbs installed, if you then install the 2gb ram to the black slots they will benefit from the dual channel and the 8gbs will be configured as single channel.

Sorry but that's ridiculous, DRAM will go to the mobos default then you have to set the DRAM up, in this case manually, unless you're happry to run at the mobos default which is prob 1066 or 1333....I can't remember when it's ever all had to have the same CAS (which goes clear back to SIMMS in the 90's)

lol I hear you. I know you think Im making this stuff up but Its applies in this case. He has an Asus P8Z77. Check page 2-5 http://www.manualowl.com/m/Asus/P8Z77-V/Manual/272708.

GSkill has some good people, but I've called Corsair, Mushkin, Crucial and others and asked for recommended secondary timings for say the tRFC when trying to get a couple of sets to play nice and they are lost ;) They still put the same stuff in the Z97 manuals (and did in the Z87s)
