I am attempting to connect my desktop with Windows 7 on it to my router by ethernet, but I have previously been using a USB wireless adapter for connection in the internet , since I just moved my desktop onto the same floor as the router. However, when I connected the computer to the router, and router to modem, there was not even an internet connection found. However, when I plugged the wireless adapter back in, it immediately found the internet again and connected normally. I would like to connect by ethernet because it should be significantly faster and less of a spotty connection than what the wireless adapter is doing right now (it overheats occasionally and leads to loss of internet connection). Thanks in advance.

Once connecting your pc to your router via ethernet, does it get assigned an IP? if not it could be that the DHCP service in your router is enabled only for wireless clients, you'll need to connect wirelessly to it and enable DHCP for LAN clients as well.
