Mobo WLAN won't connect to wifi

I built a mini-itx PC recently with an ASRock FM2A88X-ITX+ and installed Windows 8.1. I know mobo WLAN is unreliable, but the access point is very close so I thought it would do. The multiple access points it detects appear and disappear as they lose signal. Some get to 4/5 bars, then just as quickly disappear. Not sure if that's relevant to the problem.

All other devices (phones/laptops etc) can connect to the access points, but the new desktop cannot. The access points are all secured, but regardless of the key I put in it will say "Can't connect to this network." It does, however, get as far as discovering WPS (which also doesn't work).

When I connect to my phone's hotspot, it connects fine - allowing me to write this.

If I connect ethernet to the PC, it is 100% fine.

The mobo has latest WLAN and LAN drivers.

I asked about MAC filtering (the admin of this (my girlfriend's) house is very territorial and tbh, hates me) and was told it is not set up.

I'd factory reset everything and try again, but he'd shoot me.

The routers are a couple of belkins and a Telstra router.

Ideas? Thanks.

Solution
It is relevant that the network signal appear to fade in and out. My only thought is that the case may be shielding the signal. Try moving hte case and see if that helkps. See of you can fit an external antenna to the wiFi at any point.

Try getting a USB WiFi dongle (or borrow one) and see if that fixes things.
