Hello all!
just running into some troubles with my laptop i order 2 days ago from PCWorld. basically i set up the laptop as usual and installed a couple of games, programs and so on, but when i checked the temperature of my laptop, it was running really hot. to hot for a brand new laptop. it runs at around 80*C on idle and around 100-105*C when on the internet. i dare not look when running games (LoL, Sims, Starcraft). I haven't installed a load of programs, just ones that i will need like ccleaner, speccy, skype and steam stuff like that.
Also, if anyone has played LoL, it only runs it on medium settings with shadows and anti-aliasing off at 45-50fps with 2gb dedicated graphics on this machine. maybe due to the heat? not quite sure what is going on.

Would love to have some help on this, i have also shut down processes in the background to see if that was causing temperatures to be so high but that didn't help.
i feel like it may be a fault with the laptop, but not entirely sure, i have also updated the laptop but no use there.
hope to get a reply to this problem, really disappointed with the laptop sadly :(
cheers,

starklet,

First things first, the link for the laptop specs is broken, can you update us with a new one?

The heatsink fan might not be working. This happens even with new laptops from trustworthy brands. Check to see if the fan is spinning. (Look for vents on the bottom of your laptop for a small fan or try feeling the air that's being sucked in through the intake vent or pushed out through the exhaust vent.)

If the fan works, you may have to find a shop to upgrade them or contact the customer support for your laptop and make a complaint.

Or the most straightforward method: Get a laptop cooler. Cooler master sells great laptop coolers that are slim and fit almost any laptop on the market. For optimal cooling, I suggest that you get...

For optimal cooling, I suggest that you get handy and make one designed just for your laptop. (Suggestion: pull air out of the exhaust vent and push air in through the intake by adding conventional case fans).

I used to buy an ice box (filled with ice), drill 2 120mm holes on the top and some small holes on the bottom. Then I added two cheap 120mm case fans on the top 120mm hole and what that does is it sucks air in through the small holes on the bottom and the air gets cooled by the ice and gets exhausted onto your laptop. Massive con: You may want to invest in a keyboard since your computer would be raised to eye level. And you can't bring the ice box out. And there's uhm, buying the ice...

Anyways, hope that helped :)

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for your help, i have ordered a laptop cooler, like the ones that sit on your lap and you plug it in with a usb and it has fans on it to keep it cool. I will have to see how that gets on.
Also, the fans are all working however, they don't seem to be running very quickly that may be the problem, is there a way i can speed them up? there is hot air coming out of the exhaust vent, but not very quickly.
*updated the gyazo links, let me know if they don't work.
thanks :)

Hi starklet,

Looks like you're not the only one having overheating issues with the HP Pavillion laptop. I am really unfamiliar with HP laptops but I think that the main reason they made the fan spin so slowly was to allow total silence during usage.

Unfortunately, you can't control the speed of the fans for your laptop heatsinks by using programs like SpeedFan because they don't come with PWM connectors (IDK why lol)

Let's just hope that the laptop cooler you've ordered does the job well but I think that you should replace the stock heatsink with a new one. Not every laptop cooler heatsink would work with yours, which is why you will have to spend some time looking for one that would fit in your laptop. (Make see it's not the exact same one with the stock lol)

Good luck ;)
