hey guys,
i just wanna upgrade my intel e8500 to a quadcore so that my games stop stuttering. i have a gtx 750ti and my current cpu is bottlenecking. I cannot afford to upgrade my chipset currently because i may upgrade to a laptop later on. i want a q9550, but its a rare cpu and hence the cost. any other cpu you guys can recommend. btw i am facing a bug that the best solution is automatically selected in my last two post and hence did not get the correct answer. thanks :)

Can you please specify what's the model of your motherboard?

Guys, the Core 2 Duo is LGA 775.

Anyways, I would go with a decent priced Core 2 Quad. Even the 2.4ghz one (which I've used in a build) isnt too bad.

I know it's a 775, but sometimes different motherboards work or don't work will all CPU's, especially if it's an early MB that came out and a late CPU. I wouldn't put an AMD 8350 on an older 780 chipset with only 4 phase VRM just because they are both socket AM3+. Early AM3+ boards are only designed to handled 95w CPU's, not 125w+ CPU's, so not all sockets are created equal throughout the life of the board, hence asking for what MB to see what the maker suggests is the fasted compatible CPU.

Yeah, I was kind of dumb for not looking for the socket in his current CPU.

To be honest, the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 seems like the perfect solution for your case. Although not the best, if you are planning to buy a laptop soon, you shouldn't go for anything more expensive. Other than the Q9550, the only one who could be an option is the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700.

Hope I was helpful.

I didn't check the Q8400, but from my research the Q8400 is better but not for much. CPU-World: http://goo.gl/rA2WGm

It depends on how much more you have to spend in order to get the Q8400 instead of the Q6700. If the Q9550 is completely out of question, I would go for one of those two, they're very cheap and provide decent performance. Take a look at the prices in India and see if you think the Q8400 is worth the value there.

I know that the q9550 is a beast but i am getting it at 12k inr or 200 dollars and no one is selling second hand. But i am getting the q8400 for 4000 inr or 66 dollars and the q6700 is not available. Is the q8400 good or should i stick with my e8500?

It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to play a lot of games on that PC, definitely go for the Quad becuase in the future, more games will be using more cores, and the two cores won't be enough then.

If you plan to do more than gaming, something like video editing, you should definitely get a new motherboard and one of the Intel Core i5 or AMD FX.

If you want the laptop to be your computer for gaming, just leave this one with the E8500.

It entirely depends on your own needs. Anyways, sooner or later you'll have to change more than your processor. For now, that one will do fine, but in the future it'll start causing you troubles and not letting play the games you want the way you want.

Does your motherboard even supports the Xeon E5450? It has a different socket than the E8500. In my opinion you should stay with the same processor if you want your laptop to be your gaming computer.

The Q8400 has no advantages over the E8500 besides being Quad-core. If you want to play the most recent games on this computer you can always consider upgrading your motherboard and getting an i5. The upgrade to the Q8400 is not really worth it.

I dunno, someone said in my some other post that xeon e5450 can run because its the same chipset aka lga775. I have a gigabyte mobo g31m-es2l.

The Xeon E5450 is socket LGA771 not LGA775. That's why I think it's not compatible.

Okay bro, thanks for the help, i saw a post of how to use xeon lga771 on lga775 but the adapters are not available in india so i have no other choice but to stick with this. Can i get non stuttering gameplay like in crysis 3 with some trick or somesort? cause my bf3 works like a charm on ultra. ps- how to unselect the best answer? i did not choose it, it chose itself automatically.

I already unselected the best answer. Honestly the only way you can improve your performance without changing any component is through disabling background tasks that use RAM. Try Razer Game Booster and see if something changes, this program gets rid of some programs running without you even knowing helping to get more free memory. How much RAM do you have?
