I am trying to find a motherboard for a CPU I have laying around. I am not looking for anything special but I would like to get the best bang for the buck so I can upgrade the CPU later. For now the one on hand must do...

I would like to get something with 4 DIMM slots (2 will work, but 4 is preferred - also if it can support both DDR2 and DDR3 that would be a bonus), 2 pci-express slots (1 will work, 2 is preferred), and it needs to be capable of supporting x3/x4 CPU's so I can get a better CPU later. This is going in a kids computer, so it does not need to be fancy, cost effect is more important than features so long as it has the required 1 x16 pci-express slot.

Solution

An upgrade path for AM1 at the moment is unknown. But the CPU's should be more than enough for the current use case for the next few years. Although it is possible that AMD will bring the Puma based chips to the AM1 platform and possibly their successor some time in the future.

Is there a very cheap CPU and motherboard combo that would provide similar or better performance (stressing cheap here, as the recipient is a 5 year old).

--EDIT--
I do have enough spare RAM for either 2 gb DDR2 or 2 gb DDR3 - and it will be running Linux so 2 gb will get them by until I can upgrade later.

I am going to have to think about this one - it seems to be the cheapest solution so far outside of buying a used AM2/AM3 motherboard for the current CPU... And it would have a longer future upgrade life...

Looking at the FM2 boards the combo of a CPU and motherboard will run me at the very least $90 according to that pcpartpicker.com web page everyone seems to use. I need cheaper. I was hoping for like $30-40 range for super cheap motherboard - going with a new CPU and motherboard will run at least double what I was hoping to get it for... I will keep looking, maybe I will find a super deal on an FM2 package, but it seems doubtful.

Like I said, this computer is going to serve a 5 year old - so it does not need to be an uber system, just as good as I can afford.
