Installing an SSD to Dell XPS 400

We have an older Dell XPS 400 my parents use mainly for just web browsing and word processing. However, given its age, the 250 gig HDD has definitely decreased in performance. I'm worried it may fail on them soon (I did back everything up of course). Rather than investing in a new PC right now, I think I'll purchase them an SSD and re-install Windows 7.

Given that, what would be the best value for them. I'd like to get 250-300 gigs for around $100 USD or so.

Also, the PC is older so it's only SATA 2, but SATA 3 drives will still work?
And lastly, do most SSD's (being 2.5 inch drives), come with 3.5 inch mounts so I can fit in in the drive bay properly?

Thank you guys!

The m550 is faster, and pricier, however I suspect your PC only has SATA II (3Gbps) which will get maxed out by any recent SSD. Therefore, max value is your best bet - the MX100.

... or you could try the Samsung 840 Evo, which has clever software to dramatically increase speeds with a high percentage of data types.... but is pricier.

I don't think either would come with drive bay mounts, unless you found them specifically sold with those - however check the mounts in your PC - they may well have provision for 2.5 inch drives already. If you do have to buy them, they're very cheap

Crucial MX100 - it's simply the best value SSD right now. It is quick, though not the quickest, but any current SSD will max out the SATA II interface, so that's fine (I have an MX100 thru SATA II on my Dell, and it's just fine, very speedy)

You won't need to re-install Win 7 - it comes with cloning software, so you just clone the HD onto the SSD (though make sure you're pared down data volume first...)
