laptop lost option to switch to hdmi output

I used to be able to connect my laptop to my tv with a hdmi cable, but now I don't have an option to switch to an external monitor. What happened and can it be fixed?

I can still push the Fn key with F5 and the icon pops up where I used to be able to switch between hdmi, projector, laptop but only the laptop icon appears. I have a ASPIRE 5552-3691 laptop.

Sounds like th TV is no longer recognized when plugged in. Tried another cable and TV?

It's not broken or chipped and when i plug in the cable into the laptop my computer gives me an audio notifcation telling me something has been plugged into the laptop.
