what are some things I can do make my wireless connection have less ping spikes, and just make it more reliable?

Disable or enable Short GI, depending what it is currently set on now. Enable WMM. Set to wireless N only, 20mhz only, WPA-2 AES only, Set to Channel 11. Set your WAN port speed to its highest setting. Test your MTU settings to find an optimal MTU.
