i'm making my mom a new office pc and i was gonna get her a hawell i3. she needs it as less expensive as possible so i started browsing craigslist and what not an found a used i5 2500s. i know the i5 is better, its older, but still probably better, then an i3. the s marking is less power use but it can still turbo to 3.7ghz, the same as the normal i5 2500. i just want to double check and make sure. price wise, the i5 is $55, the i3 is $120.

i would not trust a used computer part, especially off craigslist. if your mom only needs to to email, pay bills, documents, youtube, facebook, etc. this build is more than capable, and is dirt cheap

Processors is something I would never trust for a used product, that's just my opinion.

What i3 model are you thinking to buy?

If the computer will only be used for internet browsing and word processing etc. I would either go for a 4th Generation Intel i3 processor (maybe the i3-4130 - $125) or an AMD for the same price (like the AMD FX 4350 - $125). You can check the difference between the two here: http://goo.gl/sBRwdw

So, between the i3 and used i5, definitely go for the i3. Between the Intel and the AMD try to get an idea of what kinds of stuff your mother will be doing on her computer and see if it uses more than two cores, if it doesn't go for Intel, otherwise...go for AMD. Just remember, if you choose the AMD, you have to pick an equivalent motherboard with an AM3+ socket.

the processor does work. but we're going as least as possible $200 is still too much. we're re-using a micro-atx case, hdd, buying 4gb ram off a friend, and we're looking to get the processor and motherboard for less. but for a pentium price, i think the i5 is too hard to pass up. graphics don't matter (youtube videos is probably the most intensive stuff theyre doing).

i can have the guy run prime 95 when i go to pick it up if that would be able to verify it's condition. it was pulled from a mac. and trust me, id rather buy new if it was possible. i was looking at the 4130 and cheapest motherboard possible. if the money was there thats what we'd be getting. theyre running xp and their business deals with people's confidential records, so they need a new computer as soon as possible. not much time to save up for something brand new

this is what we would have gotten:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i3-4130 3.4GHz Dual-Core Processor ($119.97 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI H81M-E33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($44.99 @ Micro Center)
Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($48.91 @ Amazon)
Total: $213.87

we're looking at it being able to be upgraded in the future as well, so an apu isnt that great. if it can be upgraded to an i7 in over 5 years from now then itd be awesome, and alot better than an a10.

just performance wise though, the i5 will outperform the i3 right? i am well aware of the risks of buying used and from craigslist.

The i5-2500 will perform better than the i3-4130 in every field except the single-core performance, but not by much. Hope everything works, but remember, it's risky, you don't have any kind of warranty for any of the used components. In the end, it is your choice and I can only wish you luck and except everything to work great.
