I'm looking for graphic cards and I stumbled upon the 7970 windforce cards that were really cheap. I could get 3 for about $600. Should I trifire 7970s or get a new GTX 780?

In case you're wondering, my CPU is an i7 4790k.

More about : trifire 7970 gtx 780

3 7970's will need a 1050W power supply. They won't work much better than 2 - which need an 800W psu. 2 and especially 3 7970's will need a full tower case. You will also need a motherboard that will fit them.

2 x 7970s will work about as good as a gtx780 which needs a 600w power supply but will fit in a mid tower case.

So you're saying a trifire 7970 has a diminshing return when compared to a crossfire 7970 in terms of graphics power?

Well the higher you go the less stable it gets so would only recommend 2way SLI or 2way crossfire, nothing above that.

Hi - You didn't say what res you use. Assuming something below 2560x1600, then opt for the
single card solution vs multiple cards which will produce more heat, require more power, and
there will be some micro stuttering as well.

And, by selecting a single GPU now, there is still an upgrade path available should the need
arise in the future.

its called scaling meaning how efficent the cards work together. Crossfire at its best can give i heard 80% scaling( so instead of 60 you could get 120fps) but adding a second may scale like 25% so add like 5-10fps and more power. thats what hes saying

Ah okay, now that I got that clarified I want to thank you all for being extremely helpful. I guess I'll go single gpu and later on when I need to upgrade I can possibly SLI/CF. Thanks again.
