Complete Lockup when transferring large files

I've had this problem for a while, but for most of my intents and purposes, it hasn't been a *huge* issue; I use my computer mostly for gaming anyway.

The issue is that it will do a complete system lockup when copying large files/folders to & from almost any location to any other location. There have also been a few times when this occurs without a file transfer going on (usually in the middle of a gaming session and as you can imagine, a lot of files being read from one of my 3 HD's).

When I say complete system lock up, I mean much more than a "This program is not responding" hang. The cursor stops responding, keyboard stops responding. The little animation in the corner of the file-copy process stops animating. I have an internet connection timer & bandwidth usage utility; it's timer & bandwidth counter stop counting the time/data usage. Everything. Just. Stops.

I have to push the reset button on the case to get it to reboot, and occasionally (not all the time, just occasionally) it spits out a black screen with the only text being "Disc read error ;; press ctrl+alt+del to reboot". It usually seems to find it's way back to a successful boot & back at the windows desktop.

There is no BSOD, there is not any real indication of it going belly up; I've just learned the things that seem to set it off and avoid it as much as possible (most instances I can go days without it happening, other days it happens pretty frequently).

Event Viewer has a handful of atapi errors reporting a controller error on Ide\IdePort1 ; but these don't always coincide with instances of the complete freeze, regardless they are the only ones I can think of that would involve the discs being read/copied to/from.

This issue still occurs in Safe Mode, as well.

Specs:
OS: Win 7
Hard Drives: 250GB SSDD, 2x 1TB 7200RPM HDD's
Mobo: Asus Z87 PRO

*: SSDD is the boot drive, the 2x 1TB drives are for storage.
*: I have tried a complete drive wipe & reinstall, still occurs
*: Most if not all the BIOS settings are stock; I tinkered with very few of them
*: I have not yet tried to update the BIOS for fear I'll royally screw something up
*: All drivers are up to date

bump; haven't had it lock up since I posted this, but likewise haven't attempted any large copies - almost certain if I were to go copy my whole Skyrim folder it'd do it's thing and lock up.
*not sure if these forums do bumping, but haven't seen a response at all.
