upgrading from i5 2400

i have an i5 2400 processor, gigabyte ga-768a-d3h-b3 motherboard and a 700w psu and 8 gig ram and am planning to get a r9 280x and was wondering what the best processor would be and if its all compatible.
I mostly plan to use it for gaming.

No real need to upgrade for gaming, that cpu won't bottleneck a single 280x.

Motherboard yes. I would need the make and the model of the PSU to give a solid answer. If its a decent quality PSU then it should be fine but if its a low quality PSU running it with a 280x may put the system at risk.

the psu is an xsonic atxp4-700w, i think its like the higher end of the cheapy psu's

It's still a very bad psu. I would suggest replacing it, it can't even hit 400w on the 12v rail which is extremely poor for a supposed 700w unit. Get something 550w or larger from tier 1 or 2(a or b). You can go tier 3 if you have no other choice but avoid anything in tiers 4 and 5.
