I need help. I have been reading a lot about VPN's and the benefits to them. I want to know what you reccomend.

I want to encrypt my data from my home network. I play video games, and when I do I do not want it to affect my game play. I want to set up a home server to host my video files so I can access them from any where. I also want my sister to be able to access them from her house too.

Encryption is important to me when im browsing internet and maybe the occasional torrent. But game systems it is not too important then.

I am thinking of getting an intel nuc and possibly using that as a file server, minecraft server for my home network.

My question is should I go the software route VPN with linux? Hardware VPN? If so what one.

I also have an Asus router rt-n68u and has PPTP VPN server that I can configure. I have heard PPTP isn't that great. I do not mind spending $200 - $300 on hardware if that will be a better option to do what I need. I need some guidance. I am very new to networking but have no problem doing the work to set it up, hardware or software even on linux. I just do not know what is a good option. The reason I am looking at the NUC is the good power consumption. Any insight would be helpful.

Go with Private internet access VPN. I think you just install in on your computer and you're done. They support up to 5 devices I think. Only use VPNs that accept bitcoin. You don't have to use bitcoin, but it goes to show that they are acting in the best interest of their customers privacy. I

First, you can setup a VPN in you own PC/Mac for browsing + email so that all in/out data will be encrypted while leaving video games system untouched.

I don't think spending on VPN hardware is a wise idea. You can always buy a VPN package, if you need a dedicated IP and private network, you can go with Business plan from the SumoVPN (my favorite VPN service).
