I purchased a used Optiflex 780 to replace a PC that I was using and I was going to reuse the 1tb hard drive to replace the 120gb hard drive that came with the 780. First thing I did with the 780 was create a system image on a USB drive of the Win 7 on the 120gb hard drive and created a recovery CD to boot from.

I then installed my 1tb drive in place of the 120gb hard drive and booted from the recovery cd and attempted to restore the system image from the USB drive. It failed with msg "The system image restore failed. No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found."

I tried many things, checking if the image was good by restoring to the original 120gb hard drive and I was able to use the recovery dvd and image to restore from. I used diskpart and the Clean command, installed the 1tb drive as a second drive in the PC and used disk manager to check the partition size, format the drive etc. All to no avail, I could not restore a sys image to this drive.

I gave up and purchased Acronis to clone the 120gb drive to the 1tb drive, this worked but I was disappointed and curious as to an explanation as to why I could not restore to a different hard drive when I have read that its the whole purpose of the restore utility.

The reason for this is your incompetent (so to say) backup utility and nothing else. Exact reason lies within its code, and only developers can fix that. Find one utility that works for you and never fails you and stick to it. For instance, I have never had any problems with EASEUS ToDo Backup Free, but Norton Ghost was quite problematic in many cases.
