Graphics card or motherboard issue?

Hi guys,

Windows 7
MB: ASUS P8P67
Original Graphics card: HIS HD 5850
2nd Graphics card: Radeon HD 5750 1GB

A couple weeks ago my display started going all blocky (See img)

Screen.jpg

Rebooting the machine usually sorted the issue out, but its been happening more frequently.
I've cleaned out the system and dusted

I replaced the HIS HD5850 graphics card with the Radeon HD 5750, but the issue has persisted.
Sometimes even when booting (before windows starts loading) the screen goes all blocky.

Since the issue still occurs, even though I've replaced the graphics card, does that mean its a CPU or motherboard issue?

Any suggestions as to what tests I can do to narrow down where the problem is?

Thanks

EDIT: My screenshot isnt being displayed.

The problem has persisted through 2 gpu's, do you have another display cable to try?

Good suggestion.

While the machine was still running, I unplugged the DVI cable and replaced it with an HDMI cable.
On plugging the HDMI cable in, The screen was all blocky \ messed up and I had to log off and log back on.

Some other things I've noticed today:

Changing resolution seems to sort the issue out for a while.
Earlier I reduced the resolution from 1920 X1080 to 1600 x 900 and so far it seems fine.

I don't think this is a software issue as sometimes the screen is messed up right from the start ( ie from the start of the bios boot )

Im not sure its heat related either. This issue has occurred several times when I've been away from my machine and need to "wake" it.

Any help in figuring out the cause would be appreciated.

What Power Supply have you got? It's 12V reading is too high at 12.288V

Have you overclocked your cpu? It's getting too hot - 42C at Vcore 1.211V and 3.4GHz at 26% usage

Have you overclocked your graphics card? It's also getting too hot - 51C at 1.00V with only 3% usage

Blow your case out - especially fans, filters and coolers.

Get rid of any overclocks.

Get a new power supply eg Seasonic 520, XFX 550 or Antec HCG 520M

I have an Antec 520 High Current Gamer.

Overclocking wise, about the only settings I changed when I set the machine up were in the Asus EFI bios, Id set the system performance to "power saving", I've now changed it back to "normal".

I havent overclocked my graphics card either, I've set the resolution at 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. I used to run another monitor off the card as well, but thats been unplugged for ages.

I cleared a lot of dust out of the case yesterday and also a fair amount out of the graphics card.

OS: Win 7 Premium
MB: Asus P8P67
GPU: HIS HD 5850
PSU: Antec 520 High Current Gamer

I'll read up on PSU's and order a new one.

Since the System Performance setting change and the dust clearout, I've taken new screenshots:

Thanks for the quick reply.

I had to reboot my machine a couple times to get a normal screen on boot.

I looked through the bios and only found mention of the 12v 3.3v and 5v readings on this screen and on the Monitors screen. (They were the same on both.)

What else can I do to cool the CPU down? Is it possible to under clock it?
I cant see any more dust around the CPU heatsink, but I'll unscrew the fan over the weekend and clean to be sure.

The closest I've come to overclocking is to turn on Power Saving.
If you look at the System Performance of my Bios screen shot, Power Saving is the first button, with Normal being the button now selected.

I've cleaned out my case by running a paintbrush over surfaces to dislodge the dust and blowing in it.

The screen corruption happens when the state of the screen changes. Ie When turning the machine on, coming out of sleep mode or when starting a game.
I've turned sleep mode off, the screen is now on all day and so far the issue hasn't caused me to lose any more work.
It happened when I turned my machine on for the first time this morning, I turned it off, and then on again and it is now fine.

Next steps
I'll unscrew the fan from the CPU heatsink and confirm there's no dust under there.

Is there anything else you can think of that I should check?
Is it possible that theres a problem with my CPU or motherboard?

This morning I removed the CPU heatsink and cleared any remaining dust from under it.
In the process I removed it from the CPU, I removed the old thermal paste and applied more.

CPU temp wise, I probably need to get a better heatsink, I'm currently using the stock heatsink \ fan that came with the bundle I bought.

I've replaced my monitor with an old 21" and taken more screenshots .

It looks like you may have been right about the overclocking.
While I've never really bothered with it, there is a section in the Asus Bios called AI Tweaker, by default its settings are set to Auto, so its possible the bios could be overclocking by default.

I did that, but all it did was renable the Turbo mode, that Id disabled last night.
The Asus bios Overclock settings are Auto by default.

I've reset Turbo Mode to disabled.
I've also set the AI Overclock value to Manual and changed the BCLK frequency from 100 to 85.

Heres a screenshot of the screen where I changed the AI Overclock and BCLK settings
1345504

I usually have to restart my computer several times before I get a normal screen.
Aside from swapping out components, is there any way to narrow down the faulty part?

Thanks for your help so far.

If anything, I thought changing to manual and setting the BLCK setting from 100 Mhz down to 85 Mhz and disabling Turbo mode would be underclocking?
Should I change it back?

I have absolutely no interest in overclocking, Im far more interested in the stability and durability of my system.
Prior to all this, I think the only setting I've changed in the bios is one that allows Virtualization and selected the Power Saving option on the main bios screen.

OS: Win 7 Premium
PSU: Antec 520 High Current Gamer

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K (3300 MHz

GPU: HIS HD 5850
SSD: OCZ-AGILITY3 (120GB)
HD1: Western Digital 3TB @ 6GB/s
HD2: Seagate 4TB @ 6Gb/s

Let me know if I've left anything off.
