Hey. Need some advice on my network setup. I have the Asus rt n66u setup in access point mode. I have given it a fixed ip of 192.168.0.2 which is outwith dhcp range of main modem/router and everything seems to be working fine, but Im unsure what should be entered into the Default Gateway field if anything. At the moment its 0.0.0.0.

Can someone please help.

Although you could set the default gateway on a device acting as a AP it does not have a lot of use. The IP on the AP is only used for maintenance it is not used in anyway for passing of end user traffic. The only time this device would need the default gateway is if it wanted to talk to machine outside your lan subnet. Mostly this would be some device on the internet. Only time I could even think the AP was to communicate with a internet device was if you wanted to remotely mange this device and you would still have to port map it in the primary router.

I suspect it makes no difference if you set it or you leave it blank. Most times you set these AP up and never log into them again either from the lan or from anywhere else.

You need to explain a little better. you have 2 routers? or a router and a modem?
Both are running DHCP?

Normally the default gateway will be the routers ip address for clients on the network..

If you are running 2 routers with their own ip allocations, this may not work as you have no routing protocols telling each router where the other ip ranges lie.

If you are just trying to use your own router/ap then i recommend turning off DHCP on that router, then connecting a lan port to the original router so it functions as a wireless switch.

Thanks for your reply, sorry I will explain a littile better. I have one Adsl modem/wifi router combo (sky sr102) acting as the main hub for my Internet connection. There is a second rotuer (asus rtn66u), acting as an access point. It is connected to the main hub (sky) via ethernet connection from Lan port to Lan port on each. I am aware that you should disable Dhcp on the second hub (access point) and asign it a static ip outside the dhcp range of the main hub (sky).

Dhcp on the asus hub acting as the access point is disabled and I have assigned it a staic ip which is outside the dhcp range of my main hub the sky one. Skys hub default range is 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254 so i moved this up a little to 192.168.0.5 to 192.168.0.254 to make some room for manually assigned addresses. Under the Lan Ip setup page on the asus hub, Ive changed the default of 192.168.1.1, to 192.168.0.2. Subnet is 255.255.255.0. So the Ip and Subnet mask fields are filled in and this seems to be working fine, but there is another field labled Default Gateway and is currently at 0.0.0.0. Couldn't find this mentioned in any of the guides for setting up access points and I'm unsure what to enter into this field if anything at all.

Everything seems to be working fine, if anything when connected to the asus access point (even directly with patch cable) there seems to be a slightly longer delay when accessing browser pages.

well.. broadly speaking a default gateway is where any messages are sent to which need to leave your network.
Ultimately this is the IP of your internet gateway i.e the sky router. If this option is under DHCP options (usually after subnet mask), it needs to be the same IP as your sky router because this is the default gateway being given to any clients who ask for an ip address.
