I/O Shield question

Hi

Can anyone tell me what the little pieces of metal in the periphery of some of the different holes on an I/O shied are and why they are there ?

What am I supposed to do with those ? Break them ? If they are meant to be broken, why do the mobo manufacturers put them there in the first place ?

If I leave them there they will obstruct the holes, won't they ?

I had prepared a photo to show you what pieces I mean but I do not know how to attach that photo to this post. Can anyone tell me how to do this ?

Thanks a lot

They're called tabs. They help with grounding and electromagnetic interference (EMI for short). They also provide some stability. Unless they are completely in the way, I advice that you keep them. They should slide around the ports on the motherboard.

If they are absolutely in the way, then snip them off, but they should not be.

That said, they are not absolutely necessary, but useful to have nonetheless.
The IO shield is cut out specifically for a motherboard. The IO ports of your motherboard should line up with the cutouts in the IO shield.

If you meant the little pieces on the side of the IO shield, then they are supposed to hook onto your case so it doesn't fall off.

They are not the ones I meant. I'll try to upload a picture to a site and then post a link to the photo to show you which pins I mean.

Thanks

Here is the picture showing the pins I am referring to. I have shown some of them with arrows.
