Mobo says "Reboot and select proper boot device" on startup. Does this mean I haven't routed the HDD properly?

In a word, yes.
Make sure the the hard drive with the OS installed on it is the primary boot device in the BIOS settings.
What make, model, and Bios version is the motherboard?
