High CPU Temp ?

Hi. New user but I've read lots of threads on these forums trying to solve various problems.

This is my first build. I've been having random system freezes (nothing responsive including mouse.) Initially thought it was the Windows 8.1 problem people have been discussing. But I digress because it's probably not . . .

But I was able to reproduce it with HWMonitor up:

The temperatures are not hot at all. I've never actually observed them over, say, 55C.

And if you look at the MOBO temp (CPU) max is only 49C on this occasion. But obviously the other temp is up to 287C (I presume the safety feature kicked in at that point?)

Questions:

1) Is it possible that the 287C is correct? Is it possible for it to shoot up like that for no apparent reason? Or would bad sensor be most likely?

If it's incorrect, is there a way to correct that sensor?

2) Should I return the item?

The computer is still booting so it's not entirely fried at this point (had it really gone up to 200+ would it be fried?). I've only had the item for a few days so I can still return it to retailer.

On that note, would the faulty sensor be related to the MOBO or the CPU?

3) Concern about possible damage to CPU? Mobo?

Other relevant info:

MOBO: GA-990FXA-UD3 rev 4.0
FAN: CM Hyper EVO 212 (used the paste that came with it)

Anything else? Thanks for your expertise.

99.9% chance that it's a bad sensor. If it was 287C, I'd be surprised that your board hasn't caught fire or at least have a lot melted stuff on it. And the other cores are showing much cooler temperatures. Since they're on the same die (chip), it's common sense.

CPUs these days have a failsafe that shuts down the system if anything overheats. The temp sensor might cause problems, so you'll probably want to replace it, but look and make sure it's not a software error first.

So that's the sensor in the CPU? Is there possibly a communication problem? Or is it likely the CPU?

What would I look for with a software error? As in is the BIOS not reading the CPU temp correctly? I'm assuming the reading did actually spike given that a freeze occurred (iow, it wouldn't be a problem with HWMonitor, no?)

Thanks again.

Update:

Replaced the CPU. Freezing is still occurring. I had HWMonitor up one time and it didn't show the high temperature. I presume it's possible for the failsafe to kick in before HWMonitor has a chance to display it?

So what else would cause this?
