Creating a system image

My PC's boot and application disk has a total capacity of 120GB - somewhat less with formatting -; with the OS, applications, system files, user- and app data currently occupying some 58GB.

I have never created a system image before but I thought it would be a good time to do so. The question is, what capacity disk do I need for this? Do I need a 120GB one or would a 64GB one be enough?

Also, can I - and if I can, should I - use a flash drive to create and store the system image?

You can use whatever storage device the backup pgm recognizes. If you are using Win7 Backup to make a disk image, I would recommend picking up a USB HDD the same size as the partition(s) you are imaging. The image will be compressed so it won't take up that much space, but it is a good idea to have the extra room because you never know how small the pgm can compress the image.
I have been using WD portable drives for my images, because they have never failed me. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100029226%2050068017&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20
But if you want to buy a huge flash drive for it, that would be OK too. But you'll pay as much for a 120GB flash drive as you would for a 1TB HDD.
