Pretty soon I will be putting together a rig for gaming and school. The card I want is an nvidia GTX 780, possibly 2-way SLI in the future. I have been looking at 2 possible display setups, but am having trouble deciding which one to go with.

The ASUS ROG swift PG278Q is coming very soon, and it looks amazing. For those of you who don't know, it is a 27 inch 1440p monitor with a refresh rate of 120hz. I would also probably get a 23-24 inch 1080p monitor to use as a secondary display.

I have also been looking at triple monitor setups. They look great, much better than 2 non-uniform monitors. They would be used for gaming, browsing the web, typing documents, etc.

What do you think would offer the best experience? I really like the idea of having 3 screens, but dat resolution.

Edit: I am also considering waiting for nvidia's 8xx series or getting 780ti. What do you think?

Thanks in advance

Hmm...
Given that your deciding between a 120hz 1440p + 1080p and a triple 1080p setup, I would say the 1440+1080p setup is better. You have close to the same amount of screen real estate as the triple setup, and your primary monitor is going to be just outright better feeling given its 120hz (though yea, colour accuracy is going to suffer on a panel like that).

I cant help but think the 1440+1080p setup is going to be a lot more expensive though.

All them pixels is kind of the point of triple display setups...

I prefer a single 1440p with a secondary monitor.

3x 1080p will get significantly worse performance in games.

3x1080p: 6220800 pixels
1x1440p: 3686400 pixels

Since you want an ASUS ROG swift PG278Q that is more focused on gaming than having the best quality/color reproduction possible that most 1440p panels go for.

Do you prefer having a 1440p monitor with better color reproduction over one with a high refresh rate?

three screens gives one of the best gaming experiences (To me anyways), and the more pixels is kind of the point, yes. Majority of gamer's who have the system power may prefer three screens as it is truly something that makes an impression, where one screen may but think about them having another two more with that extra FOV.

It is more about your wants over ours.
