Well, I got a question. I had some issues with my PC so I reinstalled windows in it. But, I only had a Win 8.1 Pro ISO downloaded. There were no basic 8.1 on the internet. So PC is now running an unactivated 8.1 Pro and keeps asking me to activate. My PC was preinstalled with Win 8.1.

So can I buy a windows 8.1 dvd, and refresh my PC so I can keep all my files and programs. Then activate online using built in key in BIOS? So then I can return the DVD to the retail store because I didn't use the key?

Solution
No. You have to re-install windows to downgrade. But you can copy your files to another drive. And you can't activate windows with the built in key

Because you can't see it.
That key is made by the factory to work with only one windows copy. You removed the windows it came with. That key is now used and can't be used again.
But there are some tools to see the code. You can try to activate your windows with that and see if it works
