What causes flickering screens?

Hi,

I recently got a rig with a GTX 780 and I've noticed a flickering screen on SOME games. On Witcher 2 the screen just flickers but it's more noticable in the dark, it goes when I apply v-sync and I'm left with just one line that flickers. Skyrim has one line in the middle that flickers that's noticeable in the dark slightly. Metro 2033 has a little flicker too.

Maybe I'm looking into the flickering too much, but I'm pretty sure WoW used to flicker on my old gaming laptop. I'm using the same monitor I used for my laptop so could it be the monitor? It's just some average LG monitor

Solution
come on conect the hdmi already it wont take you more than 2 minutes.
use the buttons on the monitor to specify the source.there should be a source button.
how many frames are you getting you say you have low frames how low?
if you are using a vga cable you will expirience flickering.
a single link dvi conector supports resolutions up to 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz.
a dual link dvi conector supports resolutions up to 2560 × 1600 at 60 Hz.

download fraps if you havent and tell us exactly how many frames you are getting.

The frame rate is sick, theres no problems playing any games with ultra settings, it's just some random flickering, that can be annoying on certain games. Fallout 3 was fine, but that's old I guess.

It's connected to the first one, which is where the card is placed I guess, theres a hdmi next to it too. Theres a second one below it though

Yeah I do

Do I just put the hdmi at the back of the monitor instead? HDMI to DVI-D? Just turns the screen into a normal monitor, so unable to use it as a computer monitor with that set up

Theres only an extra DVI-D port on the monitor. Connecting just the hdmi from the GPU to the DVI-D port turns the monitor into a normal screen like a TV, with no computer functionality

I've got an older model that doesn't have a HDMI port at all. I guess I'm gonna have to install Witcher 2 on my laptop and see if the problem occurs
