Both cards around the same price in the UK. Which one is better. now that Tegra K1 Shield Tablet is announced, is it worth getting a 770 compared to R9 290 cos I am looking for maximum performance and longevity.
Or my third option is to pay a little more and get a REFURBISHED 780. Should I take the risk or get one of the other two cards?
All responses appreciated
Thanks

It all depends on the model he picks. The reviews I linked were all referance design, and yes were loud and hot. Those are pretty much non exsistant now, and the board parteners have all their own models out there now. They are quiet and cool, just the same as any GTX 780 you will find. Most even have the same cooler, lol. ASUS DC II, MSI TF IV, Gigabyte windforce, etc... have coolers for both...
for max performance go for the r9 290 its much better than the gtx 770 .....well generally the gtx 770 is compared with r9 280x and the r9 290 is compared with gtx 780..so u can assume which u buy..and if u can manage to get the gtx 780 then it will be great because at 1080 p gtx 780 will outperform the r9 290...

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/radeon_r9_290_review_benchmarks,19.html In half of these benches the r9 290 beats the GTX 780. In the others it is either equal or just barely falls behind. Maybe 1-5 fps difference. I would say the 290 is a tiny bit better than the GTX780, but not by much. When overcocked the r9 290 out performs the 290x as well.

In this review they are within 1% of each other through all the games tested: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/R9_290/26.html

Imo go for r9 290

770 has almost same specs as 280x so following the logic 290 is more powerful.

290 has 4gigs of vram and higher bus bandwith so maybe in future when u want to use 2 or 3 screens 290 will kick shit out of 770.

And dont forget about potential of mantle (increased performance in games that support mantle)

There have been rumors that gta v would have mantle, not sure tho because i havnt seen official announcement about that.

Dont get me wrong, 770 is agreat card, but for the price of 290 you definetly should go for 290

Edit: is it 290 with reference cooling? If yes temps might go pretty migh but that chip is designed for that and on 100% fan speed if will sound like a hair dryer or a jet engine (ive had one of those)

Well in general the 2 cards perform very much the same but at higher than 1080p resolutions the 290 takes the lead (more vram) depending on the resolution used.

If you are comfortable with a warmer, louder card then the R9 290 is perfectly worth it at a lower price point.

However if noise is an annoyance then consider the GTX780 instead.
