Hi, I am having some issues with the Total war series, been trying Medieval 2, Empire total war and Rome 2, and all of them i am having real low fps, i mean medieval 2 has around 30 fps in a battle, and i previously had pretty decent fps in all those games. Anyone got any ideas to why? I updated to windows 8.1 and after that it seems as it happened? Could there be a fix for this or do I have to go back to Win7? All other games work real good, Metro Last light, average 60 fps Vsync on, Bf4 same.

Gtx 770 MSI Twin Frozr
AMD 8350 FX 4.0 Ghz

This series of games is very, very CPU dependent. I have a core i7 4770k @ 4.5 GHz (not many processors faster than that) combined with an overclocked R9 290 vid card and I still get under 40 FPS at times (for Rome II).
If you monitor your video card GPU usage while playing, you'll see that it will hardly ever use 100 percent of the GPU.
Not much you can do i'm afraid other than turning down some of the graphics settings - or super clock that CPU...

Rome 2 is understandable, but i mean come on Medieval 2, it's real old, i played on 1024 resolution and still got these frames. It played just fine with my 1090t and gtx 460 with a huge amount of soldiers. Empire also played really well. Has it got something to do with DirectX not really matching up or something? Rome 2 also played alot better on Windows 7, the other two games I hadn't tried.

Yeah I could see it being a programming thing with directx or openGL as those old games should run well with newer CPU's.
If you were running Rome 2 better on Win 7, it shouldn't be noticeably worse on win 8. I would completely remove the video card drivers (try DDU software) and the game, and re-install.
Win 8 and win 7 should perform the same for gaming.

I have reinstalled and tried both Win7 and 8, and Display drivers with that. Game also, but still it's this issue with the low fps, I mean come on like 5000 player battle with down to 15 fps sometimes? Medieval 2.

Same with rome 1 i have some really low fps, lowest settings and i still get like 50 fps down to 30, with 6000 men army, what's wrong, is it the cpu not working with these games? As the cpu usage is really low, like maximum 50% and gpu usage, 5% ?? What is going on haha .. Really annoying as i love these games, could it be a motherboard issue? Perhaps this should be moved to Cpu department?

Alright - I had a problem with Rome 2 and newer video cards. My ATI card has "PowerTune" which clocks the video card down when not being used. The problem I had was that Rome goes from 80% GPU to 15% and back within 1 second - the powertune would see the drop in usage and then drop the MHz of the Card, but then of course rome would need the GPU again within the next half second and by the time the PowerTune clocks the speed of the card back up it's too late. Anyway, what was happening was I was getting so much lag in a battle i was down to 4 frames a second.
Nvidia has PowerPlay which does the same thing. To fix this, I used MSI afterburner (which works for both brands) and in the settings section, there is an option near the bottom which allows you to run overclocks "without powerplay/powertune support." What this does is force the card to stay at the MHz you want it to. Fixed my problem.
See if this might be whats causing the problem for you. Download MSI afterburner. you don't have to change the clock settings, just change that option in the settings and apply. I also like the fan curve control the software has.

okay, first off you're computer rig is super outdated don't expect high fps on any games. second total war games are garbage. i'm sorry to tell you this i love total war played total war games since shogun 1, but imagine having a gtx 1070, 16 gbs of corsair vengeance 2400mhz ram, a skylake 6600k i5 stock 3.5 ghz auto overclock to 3.9ghz and getting between 85-60 fps in shogun2 and of course the game lags when you're in a battle and you have full armies and you fast forward to anything more then normal speed and i'm talking about like 55- 45 fps lag in certain situations for short periods of time. imagine playing Total War Attila and getting 65-45 fps on high settings @ 1080p with a freaking gtx1070 with 16gbs of gaming ram @ 2400mhz and a freaking 6600k skylake freaking intel processor. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW ANNOYING IT IS TO SPEND THAT KIND OF MONEY ON A NICE COMP RIG LIKE THIS JUST TO FIND OUT TOTAL WAR CAN'T PROGRAM GAMES PROPERLY!. oh ya and one more thing krille3. it was announced before Total War Attila came out that the game would be 'designed to run on future graphics cards (implying that it would run slow on current ones) well guess what bud since the release of the game i now have a future graphics card and do you think i get better frames then i did with my old graphics card (radeon R9390) nope its exactly the same. BECAUSE THE GAME IS TERRIBLY MADE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GRAPHICS, MEMORY, OR CPU. Total War Attila is so broken no one gets good fps. you can't run it @ 1440p on anything less then a gtx 1080 most likely and even then you won't get more then like 65fps if that.

Yep the series is terribly optimised which is ironic considering it's a PC exclusive and has a partnership with AMD. I have a i7-6700K @ 4.5 GHz OC, 16GB DDR4 3200 and R9 390X 8GB G1 Gaming Edition and most the Total War games hammer me at 1080p Medium/High Settings. If i try put AA up then the game will be below 30 FPS all the time unless im zoomed in right on nothing lol. The game was barley even playable on Low/Medium 1080p on my old GTX 760. They really need to up their game, Strategy game should not be so hard to run especially since they are hardly extremely detailed graphics like Witcher 3 which i run at Ultra on the same rig really well. :/

*Edit* This is Attila and Warhammer i'm referring to ^
