PC Black/Blue Screen Problem

Hello, firstly sorry if this thread is in the wrong section. I get confused on forums so easily for some reason.

Anyway, first of all my PC is about 3-4 months old now and here are the specs:
• Intel Core i3 2120 (Sandy Bridge) CPU
• AMD Radeon HD 5670 GPU
• MSI B85-G43 Gaming Motherboard
• Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB Kit (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz
• Corsair Builder Series 500W PSU (80 Plus Bronze)
• Seagate 500GB HDD 7200RPM

The OS I run is Windows 7 64bit in case that is of any use.

So the problem is that my PC will randomly (and this can be every 10 minutes or couple of hours) black screen or blue screen. Blue screen has only happened once for me and it mentioned about a memory error. But it will occasionally black screen but with some grey-ish lines across the screen.

What I've tried:
• Looking at the hottest my GPU will become while playing TF2 on max settings at 60 FPS - Came out to ~50 Degrees (Centigrade) so I believe that isn't too hot for gaming.
• Looking at the hottest my CPU will become while playing TF2 on max settings at 60 FPS - Came out to ~55 Degrees (Centigrade).

I have also put all my parts on PC Part Picker to look at an estimated wattage and it only comes out to about 300W maximum and I even looked at most of the parts on their website and their maximum usage and yet again only about 300W so I'm definite it wouldn't be the power supply.

Fortunately, I still have warranty on all my parts so I can just get a new one for free but I need your help to solve this problem since it's ruining my summer holidays.

Thanks.

"But it will occasionally black screen but with some grey-ish lines across the screen." Sounds to me like your GPU is failing. The Blue Screen you had could help, it would be localed in c:\windows\minidump. If you can get it to boot and display properly, check the event viewer in Windows Logs > System to see if you notice anything around the time your display has the issue.

Check for updated drivers and BIOS updates as well.

I found several files in the c:\windows\minidump location but I don't understand what I can do with them to read the data or whatever we're trying to achieve from it. Also with the drivers and BIOS they are all up to date but not the beta versions as I've had trouble with beta versions before. And finally with the event viewer in Windows Logs > System I haven't noticed anything but 2 errors which say the following:

The server {CC957078-B838-47C4-A7CF-626E7A82FC58} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

&

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
sptd

I assume the first error was when it black screened while turned on and the second while I was trying to turn on my pc. (occasionally it won't bother reading the hdd from what I can tell.)

The minidumps have info in them regarding what happened during the crash. BlueScreenView from nirsoft works good at looking at what is in those minidump files, try that and report which files it shows highlighted in pink and the bug check string listed for the dump files.

The server {CC957078-B838-47C4-A7CF-626E7A82FC58} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
no big deal

but that older card may not like newer drivers try the 13.4 and see be sure to read the release notes for the proper install/uninstall steps

after you uninstall the driver and the card is back on default windows standard vga driver shut down discharge the computer and remove the card from the slot and reseat it tto be sure its got good contact in the slot.. retry

I've done what you said and loaded the latest .dmp file on my system for it and it shows in pink the following things:

aswSP.SYS
atikmdag.sys
ntoskrnl.exe

Tell me if you need the file location or whatever else details from the .dmp file.

Currently doing all the instructions as you said. Just installing the 13.4 drivers now. I will post afterwards to announce if it's fixed or any further problems which I may encounter.

well I installed the 14.4 drivers to help some guys out with them to see what the issues was and now I wish I did not I had no issues until I did that and going back to my 13.4 driver did not ''fix'' the issue there breaking something in windows after working on this issue for some time its now down to put up with it and see or reinstall windows luck for me its minor but still 14.4 screwed something up..

Also while on the topic of fixing my pc, when I start up my pc it occasionally doesn't bother reading the hard drive from what I can see. Not sure if this is because I used my old hard drive from my old pc so that I wouldn't have to buy windows7 again.

Also at some points I think it might be java because Java has always caused me problems including on my old old pc from 2006. Might be because it always immediately searches for updates when booting up even sometimes before the windows7 desktop has appeared.

I've uninstalled and installed a older version of ATI's drivers (13.4 driver i just installed) and it all seems to be working fine. *touches wood* Also now that you mention Avast, I've had problems with them as well in the past saying that something is a virus when it clearly isn't. It even said Steam was a virus at one point. So what do you recommend doing with Avast?

Just installed it now and it already feels better. For once it didn't crash on restarting my PC (not sure if this was just luck). I will play a couple of games to test out what normally might crash my PC after a while and see what happens if anything. Thanks to you both so far for your help! :D

Just played some TF2 (about 10 minutes) and then I left the PC to idle while I went for dinner and it hasn't black screened (yet) when it was idling which it used to quite a lot. Also, the PC seems slightly faster now after I uninstalled Avast to install Microsoft security! :D

Finally made my pc black screen. As usual it was the Motd adverts on some TF2 servers which have caused errors and black screens for 2 years now on my old and new pc. Believe it's just because it isn't coded well and it just doesn't work properly.

Shouldn't be any problems now hopefully with just normal stuff on my pc since everything else which normally causes a black screen didn't make it happen. So thanks for both of you for helping me :)

Just black screened again -.-

I'm really starting to think it's Java auto-updater now. Whenever it loads it seems to crash and then occasionally straight afterwards it'll cause my PC to black screen because of the crash. Any ideas?

I searched that up but nothing useful came up for me. Also, I've had many problems with Java before (it even messed up my old pc stopping it from connecting to any wi-fi) So what I've done is that I've turned off Java in total (because I don't even use it to be honest) and also with Flash Player (because often it black screens if I load a YouTube video) I turned off hardware acceleration and that seems to have solved something but I don't know what.

At this moment I just feel like buying a new HDD and starting on a brand new Windows 7 rather than using my old PC's HDD which had lots of old driver software.

True but updating it always seemed to cause problems.

I don't know why it is there anyway. I'm sure it must of been the people at my local computer shop in which set it up for me at first. (That was back when I didn't even know what specs meant in a PC)

That hasn't seemed to work. My PC just black screened again when trying to load a YouTube video and I have uninstalled Java. :3
