Wired Internet Connection

Hey! My name is Mike, and this is my first posting on Toms Hardware :) I'm having a very unique problem with my internet speed. I have Comcast, and pay for 50 Mbps, and I have a full wired connection (cat6) to my linksys AC1600 router. my speed typically tests right between 46 and 56 mbps on Speedtest, however, at random my speed will drop to an unsightly 4Mbps to 7mbps, until i do a system restore. At first, I thought it was Comcast throttling me, until I realized that while my desktop was running ~5Mbps, my Ultrabook was downloading wirelessly at the full 40mbps, and has always done so. I have not tampered with the Realtek PCIe Properties. I have the latest GBE driver for it as well. I work for Staples, and have had our tech supervisor look at it, and was at a loss for words on what could be happening. any ideas?

It doesnt matter how far I go back with my restore, just this morning I did a Restore to 3 AM, and it took my speed from 7mbps BEFORE the restore, to 55 mbps AFTER the restore. Could it be some sort of Windows Update (windows 7 by the way) causing the issue???

There is another poster that is having similar issues, there is nothing definitive when do any research on it. Do you know which update it was sepcifically that was causing your issue.

I have seen windows updates cause all sorts of issues, sometimes they only effert 1%of people with a specific peice of hardware. Years ago on an XP machine I had to revert windows updates and then apply the fixed windows update because the had an update that confused registry keys with only destkop computers that has a specific realtek audio chip in them. You could not even boot into safe mode, had to use a boot disk and load the registry sam file from the boost disk to fix what they broke.
Run malwarebytes to check for infections like ddos programs that would run and use up your bandwidth.

It is a weird issue for just one computers bandwidth to drop. Do you have any QoS set on your router that would be reducing bandwidth to your desktop.

Do you have a wifi adapter to test in the desktop?

sorry for the late reply, i never got a notification that anyone replied :( HOWEVER..... no, the ultrabook is completely separate, i was just stating that while all other computers stay fast online, my pc gets super slow.

boosted1g, yes, my first thought was a virus, but its most definitely not, i ran malwarebytes, and SAS, and they found nothing but .pups, and when i cleared those, and restarted, it didnt change anything. I did test the wireless network speed from the desktop, it has an AC card built in, and the router, as mentioned before is also AC, and i got the same speed as wired. I believe i am on to something though, but i dont know why it would affect the internet speed this way... There is a windows Critical Update that auto-installs, and that was why when i did the system restore to before that point, it would fix it. So i disabled windows update for a few days altogether, and my speed is still up. when i check for Updates, it comes back saying there are none available???? it only installs itself when it is set to automatically install update. again, why would a windows update affect internet speed so negatively?

another thing, it only affects the IPv4 speed, but when i do a test on the IPv6 download speed, it always stays where it should. i know ipv4 and ipv6 are a totally different subject, but its strange that it only affects one of the 2. might help us figure out why. and i will begin working on narrowing the update down...

its just such a pain to research, because when i look up reasons why my internet is slow, its always the same type of people that are asking why they are paying for 50mbps and getting slow torrent speeds or whatever. it makes it really hard to find solutions to more difficult issues. windows does do stupid things sometimes though....

So I completely disabled windows update from the last time, and the computer has been doing pretty good, until yesterday, when it went down again to less than 1mbps on speedtest.net :/ did a system restore to the 26th and its all better. i guess ill just have to periodically do system restores??
