Slow boot on SSD

Hi all,

I just did a major upgrade in which I replaced my MoBo, CPU, memory and added a SSD to the mix. Afterwards I put a fresh install of Windows 7 on the new drive. Though the speed of the drive seems nice and quick, the boot time is not. Based on the info from Soluto, it takes a little over two minutes to boot up. This is faster than it was with my old setup (5+ minutes) but slower than my other hard drive-based systems. The lag takes place during the "starting windows" phase of the boot. Here are my questions:

1) Can having multiple hard drives result in a slow boot? This is my gaming/media center computer, so I have 6 hard drives attached. I unplugged a couple of the externals, and the boot time dropped by about 30 secs. Is this normal and simply a function of having many drives?

2) My new MoBo has some issues with the network port. Basically, ethernet does not work, and all of my troubleshooting has been unsuccessful (I have a ticket open with Gigabyte). Wireless works, my drivers are up to date and there are no errors showing in device manager. Might something like this be responsible for the boot lag, even if Device Manager Shows everything being okay?

Note: I also reviewed event manager to see if there are any errors during boot. There are not. Being a new OS install, there is nothing interfering with the loading of the OS either, save maybe the antivirus program (Avast).

Thanks!

Specs:
GA-990FXA-UD3 Mobo
AMD FX 8320 CPU
8 GB Memory
750W Power Supply
Radeon 6850 GPU card
Drives: 250GB SSD, Multiple 1TB drives

click start>and type msconfig into your search bar and then press enter. go to the startup tab and see what programs you have that are starting with windows.uncheck any of them that dont need to start with windows.for example i have two that start with windows.
If you have your ssd setup as first boot device then multiple hard drives have almost no effect on boot time.

Have you ran memtest86 to test your memory?
The ethernet controller issue could be your problem as modern OSs can stall trying to connect to a network before finishing booting.

boosted - I made sure that the SSD is primary in the boot order, though I can't recall if it was that way before the windows install or later. Would it be beneficial to do a windows re-install and unplug all other internal drives so that there is no possible conflicts?

Didn't run Memtest though it is brand new memory. Still worth checking in case I got a faulty stick.

I'll look further into the ethernet issue. I'm hoping I didn't get a faulty moBo.

Aldan - I did try this, both using mconfig and Soluto, which analyzes the programs. New install so not much there yet. Also, it was slow booting before I added any programs, during the install process.

Is there a good program for analyzing the boot processes and finding which is lagging on me?

I think you found your issue, when you unplugged your external hard drives your boot time went to a normal speed. I believe there is a setting either in windows or your bios to scan USB devices on boot up (I don't know what it's called exactly but I have heard of this happening before)

Thanks for posting the brand and model of your motherboard. You have a motherboard equipped with an AMD SB950 south bridge chipset that supports SATA 3 6Gb/s solid state drives. There have been 4 revisions since the motherboard was first introduced early last year. Although the initial technical reviews were quite favorable this particular motherboard has had more than its fair share of problems.

There have been quite a few BIOS, chipset, and driver updates since the board was first introduced. Here is a link to the Gigabyte web page with all of the updates for Revision 1.0 of your motherboard:

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3894#

If you have one of the other 3 revisions you'll have to look them up instead.

BTW - Which ssd did you purchase?

Aldan - thanks for the suggestion of bootracer, I'll give it a try.

Burdenbound - I'll check into this to make sure there's not a wonky BIOS setting.

JohnnyLucky - I was afraid of that - I have that sinking feeling that I spent a lot on a bad board. I'll have to check the revision number tonight. If I have an earlier revision, is it possible to update the firmware? Or am I stuck with the earlier version?

I did some digging and saw that Realtek LAN issues are common on this board. I did see a mention of enabling something called IOMMU in BIOS, which fixed the problem for some. I'll try that tonight too.

The SSD is the Crucial MX-100 256GB
